chartpolski 24,290
In my opinion, there are two variables which dictate how many dogs you own; time and space, (no, it's not a science lesson !!!). I've retired, so I have the time, and have space for 3 or 4 dogs, but choose to have a maximum of 2. This is so I can give them the attention they need, feeding, grooming, excersing and training, etc., and still have time for other things. I have a 8/9 y.o. Doberman and an 11 m.o. Lurcher and they are out mooching every day for at least 2 hrs in the morning and 2 hrs at night, I couldn't really justify having more dogs, but this doesn't mean other people can't successfuly have 3, 4 or more dogs and give them all the attention they need, it's down to personal preference. Cheers. Quote Link to post

wunwin 0
I had 2 lurchers once the wife left me,and took 2 collies with her! Then i met my current partner, and she had 4 dogs. 3 collies and a terrier. So once she moved in, we had 6. Then i was given a whippet, so we have 7. Every time we walk the lot together, we meet some twat with 1 disobident mutt, who says' oo havent you got your hands full' No, twat, we havent cos ours are all obidient. Your the f****r being pulled round the fields out of controll! People piss me off sometimes. Quote Link to post
brock 11
yea, aslong as you have the space and time for each and every dog then its down to the individual, you allso have to take into consideration the other people aroud you, like neighbours etc, obviously excessive barking or whinning is a pain in the ass to people, but aslong as they are all quiet and kennels are always kleen then they can keep their noses out-if you are lucky enough not to have neighbours then do what the hell you like Quote Link to post
LDR 29
3 lurchers, one is 9 months, they have kennels in the back yard for when we are out and they spend time in when we are in........ Quote Link to post
Guest MOLLY
Two lurchers and three terriers, but i wouldnt have this many again. Once you get beyond a certain number dogs change, pack instinct takes over especially if you exercise them all together. Three would be my maximum in the future. They are all happy dogs but i can remember back to when i only had 2 or 3 and i feel they were much happier and much better trained. And i was more relaxed  MOLL. Edited to add...you cannot have as many dogs as you like. Your local councils will have a maximum for dogs allowed in one household, without needing permission and a licience Quote Link to post

Nell 1
I have 1 lurcher dog, 1 jack russell bitch, 1 black patterdale bitch, A red fell x lakey type bitch and her black and tan daughter. I work a lot of cover with the terriers (usually 2 at a time), also a LOT of ratting, the patterdale and the red bitch are used for what little ground work I do. and the lurcher is there for a bit of allsorts really, mainly to make short work of whatever bolts I also do alot of squeaking with him   Quote Link to post

I think molly has hit the nail on the nail here about the pack instinct ,I have twenty and they really act like a fox hound pack, and if I take one or two away by them sevles they are always looking about for the others . lucky 578
3 lurchers (1 is a pup) 2 terriers and 5 beagles (3 are pups) but i could do with another lurcher really . i usually have around 4 lurchers and they all get worked hard, thats probably why i'm down to 2 (working) now .
