best cartridge for pigeon

Recommended Posts

Decoying I use anything that is free or comes cheap!

If it goes bang and lead is in the air your gonna get results!

Best I shot over deeks was with 1oz loads!

Very kind to shoot all day.

Think it was 86 pigeon to 110 spent carts!

hi all

what is youre favorate cartridge for pigeon

My favourite all round cartridge was 6.5 30g clear pigeon - not sure who made them as I have not seen any lately.

Out one day and a high pigeon came over - chose left barrel 3/4 choke 34g 5s + missed so I tried (in desperation) right barrel 1/4 choke 6.5 30g - result stone dead ! that was the day I found my favourite all round cartridge ! plenty of pellets for a full pattern.

a more probable explination on the situation you discribed, its very common this happens, and it aint to do with size of shot etc... imo you / they , didnt / dont , swing enough on the first shot and missed behind and as you say due to desperation the gun is swung quicker for the second shot giving more leed and there for resulting in a kill...... could be wrong but thats my thought any way

You are probably right as far as the miss /hit sequence and more lead in desperation.

My point was that in my view the bird was out of range for the right barrel 1/4 choke hence choosing the left 3/4 34g 5's as it was way up but having seen it killed then with the right barrel at that distance convinced me of the all round capability. Good for pheasant/pigeon/woodcock. I know a lot of this is in my mind giving confidence but having said that I always still carry a few 34/36g no 5's in case a long range possibility occurs rabbit/fox

using eley, 32g, numbers,4,5,6, i 6 myself for pigeon, again alot can depend on chokes, type of gun,but the shells we use are great,i used the clear pigeon, also the express, all good shells, just for the price of the eleys and the fact they always shoot well and give good results i stuck to them, dont want to go off the topic, but whats eveveryone paying for there shells by the 1000, we pay £160 a 1000
