Lurchers and cats...

Recommended Posts

Hi i have a freind who i interested in getting into working lurchers but i am worried for him as there are alot of cats in this area. My question is this can a working lurcher ever get along with cats? As everyone i have ever seen or worked has hated them. I am lucky as there are not that many cats near me and my dogs are always supervised. He has the problem that the dog will have to live indoors and not kill every cat in sight. If brough from a puppy and soicalised with cats could the dog tell the differece between a bunny and a cat and would it effect its work?

Thanks steve

I haven’t had any problems, my last dog was very keen on rabbits but then would sleep with the cat or more accurately, he would fall asleep and the cat would creep into his bed and fall asleep next to him. But then again he also grew up with cats in the house and met plenty in other people’s house.

Thats what im worried about mate! I dont want people reporting my pals dog for tearing up the local cats:( So if socilised well from a pup the lurcher should be ok with them?

Try to stop them if you can, because if they bump in a nasty feckin Tom cat, ive seen dogs kill them but they can make a feckin mess of your dog. And if you go round farms, they have a couple knocking about, and if it kills them you could loose your permission. :wallbash:

My local permission has none so his dog will be fine there but it is his home address i am worried about. Should he start with a pup? Just starting out i thought it would be easier for him to buy a made dog but this comes with the problem that it may not like cats too. What would you advise?

Unless you know a dog is 100% with cats, get a pup. :victory: because if people want sell a mature dog, they can+will tell you what you want to hear. ????

LOL depends if the dog has been set onto cats by previous owner, our lurchers are ok with my cats but would chase any other ones or ours if they ran, so they are kept apart for the good of both partys lol
