JPTfellterrier 65
well my terrier is getting grumpier and dominent as she gets older but has never been one to start a fight what she does is stand on her back legs and lick the lurchers face then starts to growl and then it turns in to a fight, ive tryed just leaving them to get on with it but one minute they will be fine with one anouther and the next minute its world war 3, i dont trust them to be left together any more as the other day i left them outside in the yard like i usually do and i come back to find a yard splatered in blood and a terrier with a bite mark to the face, neck and gum...shes fine...anouther example is today my lurcher and the terrier im looking after where having there usual ruff and tumble and my terrier was just trying to turn it in to a scrap with my lurcher, so i kept a hold of her while they were playing and she started yapping then when they got closer she was snarling and growling i think its a dominance thing, anyone got any ideas to sort them out as im afraid the lurcher will do some serious damage to her p.s. as the saying goes , if you havnt got anything nice to say dont say it at all

JPTfellterrier 65
it usually starts from the face licking, i just dont no wether to let them settle there diffrences or break it up, not sure but the terrier has never been like this with any other dog, although there has only ever been small dogs in the house
Guest jt750
Face licking is used by pups in wild dogs to get the animal to regurgitate its food so they can feed.So it looks like a dominance thing ..terrier is saying you WILL feed me ..Lurcher is saying bugger off and the terrier isn't responding so its getting out of hand ..some terriers just don't learn who is the dominant animal and what happens is because the terrier comes off second best its deemed the lurcher is the bad one and got rid of. You have to assert your dominance and put them both in their place and you are pack leader because it sounds like this terrier wants to be pack leader and maybe doesn't see you as dominant

JPTfellterrier 65
the terrier knows im top dog she just cant except that her and the lurcher are equal....they have both had multiple, lets just say a, firm tellings off( to keep the antis on this site at bay) so even though the terrier is 3 years older than the lurcher will she still be wanting her to regurgitate food? shepp 2,285
Your the leader of the pack and if there is going to be any agression shown, it will be by you. That's what they need to know, so jump on them quickly and don't leave them to sort it out between themselvers.

ferret15 0
the terrier knows im top dog she just cant except that her and the lurcher are equal....they have both had multiple, lets just say a, firm tellings off( to keep the antis on this site at bay) so even though the terrier is 3 years older than the lurcher will she still be wanting her to regurgitate food? the terrier and the lurcher are not equal there is a pecking order and hight can some times be the problem because the lurcher is taller the terrier see it as dominance I'm not explaining my self very well. have you ever seen a dog stand over another or push its chest against one while holding its head above the others back this is all about dominance. it could be that the terrier is smaller its felling intimated or just challenging the lurcher for its steep on the ladder . in a balanced pack the pecking order will change with circumstances IE illness, old age etc. i have found that bitches are the hardest to break of the habit of fighting once its starts (maybe a woman scorned is to be feared in all species ) and it some times is never resolved fully IE fine when your there there fine but leave them alone and they fight. with the regurgitation of food thing i doesn't matter about age if she licks your face its the same thing most domesticated dogs never fully lose the puppy behavior. there is a good book called THE TRUTH ABOUT DOGS BY DESMOND MORRIS see if you can find a copy it will give you a good insight in to there behavior.
