fox hunting scope

Recommended Posts

just wondering what the opinions are on scopes for fox hunting with the .223. i would like your views on preferences for magnification, reticles etc. I will hopefully get my slot for 223 back in a week or so and will be looking out for a scope etc.

I've had a few scopes up till now and have settled on the Bushnell range. I like what they do because they do it well.

On my .22lr I now have a 3200 elite 10x40 tactical with the target turrets and mildot reticle.

I have 2 4200 elite 6-24x50 tactical with the target turrets and mildot reticle. This I have sitting on my CZ .223 and the other one will be sitting on my Sako 75 in .308. With this scope I can see the 223 bullit holes @300m. The turrets will always return to the zero after turning up or down for the diffferent dialed in ranges i.e. 100m, 200m, 300m.

They do what it says on the box and do it well.

As for price the 3200 10x40 is €399 in Duffy's (Galway) I got it for €115 on E bay and is top class.

The 4200 6-24x50 is about £675 sterling say €750. I got one @€430 on E bay and the other @€385 from airgunbbs.com in the sales section.

Both scopes are in perfect condition.

Keep an eye to the airgunbbs.com sales as the bargains are there to be had. Check a least once a day because the scopes go quickly.

And don't short change yourself on the magnification it's better to be looking at it than looking for it.

Illumniated is good but if you have a good lamp you can live without it.

zeiss conquest 6x20x50. superb optics and about the best you will find sub £1000 scope. light to as its a 25 mm tube.

i have the number 4 crosshair which is a thin line at 12 oclock and thick lines at 9,3 and 6 oclock.

ideal under the lamp for fox. but harder to use if shooting at targets. if you want one to shhot for targets get the zplex recticial otherwise know as the number 20 :gunsmilie:

Leupold stuff is good but the prices have gone silly now so you will struggle for 500 quid.

Nikon Monarch is worth a look - I tried the 4-16x42 on my CZ, optically great but didn't fit due to the high bolt lift :(

Bushnell do the 6-24x40 elite 4200 which should work pretty well as well.

i bought a leupold 8.5 - 24 x 50 off a forum member recently ( good scope) and i am currently using it on my 17hmr but i may transfer it onto the 223 if it finally comes through. I am keen to get a feel for the level of mag that shooters prefer for foxes, to be honest i dont imagine i will be shooting anything over 200m anytime soon.

Foxes don't need all that much mag, 10-12x is perfectly fine. I have a 6-18 Leupold on my CZ223 at the moment, but the top end is for long range, daytime rabbits. Charlie can be taken out to 300+ on 10x quite happily.

Magnification is a strange old thing and everyone has their preferences......I run 6x for almost everything, even to and past 200yards...sometimes crank it up to 8 or 10 to look around.

Last trip to Bisley at 200 yards I was on 6x and shooter next to me was on 24x...whatever floats your boat!!
