Tiercel 6,986
I have made 3 x 50yd and 1 x 25yd nets this year so far. I used a 20/6 100% spun polyester totaly rot proof and you can use a single knot with it. The twine cost £20 for a 1.5 kilo ball 2 of them will make 200yds of stretched netting ie 2 x 50yd double strand nets so that works out @ £20 a net for the body of the net plus one 250gram 20/16 spun polyester for the selvage and the running lines, plus the cost of the dye £4 altogether you are talking about £35 a net to make. Twine is available through the net loft. If you use hemp the twine alone would cost at a guess around £60 to £70 mark Molecatcher is selling a 20/12 twine that does about 40 yds at 14 meshes wide at a pretty reasonable price. Your best bet is to pm molecatcher he will sort you out with the best twine to suit you. TC Quote Link to post

Tiercel 6,986
Unless your fast and produce good quality nets...... Save your time. I would be intrested to know what you call fast? I make a 4' 10 12 14 < 16 by 14 > 14 12 10 purse net in about 35 minutes but will take a month to make a 50yd long net. Speed has nothing to do with it. Its all in the mind if you want to make a net you will, no matter how long it takes. TC Quote Link to post

Its all in the mind if you want to make a net you will, no matter how long it takes. TC Wouldn't call that fast or slow TC. I'm a slow net maker so perhaps that's why my 25yd long net got reduced to a shorter stop net Suppose If you have the time and patients go for It but I have neither. Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
Maty, I am one of the most impatiant persons you are likely to meet. There is a good trick when It comes to making long nets. Before you have had enough put it away and forget about it for a couple of days. Dont make a big deal about finishing the net just say to yourself I am going to knit a yard of net and thats it. I get days where I cannot do a row as I don't feel like it, other days I will do twelve yards. It really is suprising how quick they come together. The hardest part I find is the last 5 yards. The way I look at it any time spent knitting a net is better than watching Corrie. TC Quote Link to post
mole catcher 1
net making is a mind set, time is nothing more than a segment drawn out on a clocks ticking hands, its about whats going on in your mind that needs to be correct for you to make nets with any type of regularity. I have lost count how many long nets i have made, be those short stop nets to the larger 100 yrd working length beasts i have made last year. Then theres the days where i make 30+ purse nets but theres also the days where i dont even look at a net making needle. What it is for me on a personal level is its a job, something i need to do to pay the bills, but also its just a mind set. Its like a walk, to get some where on a walk you must take the first step, followed by another, and another, and so on. As your walking your not counting the footsteps, your not thinking of how your bodys working to get you moving your just doing it. same should be for net making, just go with the flow and dont get to hung up on time, enjoy it if you can. If not except it that for you to be able to stand and say " I made that" and be proud of the fact, you first need to actually do it. Edited May 8, 2009 by mole catcher Quote Link to post
R_Oldroyd 17
Hi all. When i make a 50yd hemp net i use an old 8kg bucket. I don't really bother measuring it length until it nearly fills the bucket. The first net took well over a year to make as it was not really a priority. If you obsess about how much you have not made you will never finish it. I only make 2 50yds nets a year now because of other projects. Before you know it you will have loads of nets. I started to make shorter nets out of some of my 50yds nets as they are 5Ply and are now reduced to 12yds with salvages and twentys. Any cut down nets replaced with a 50yd 4 ply. Top tip though don't be making any thing else while you make your first longnet it will just box your head out. Find yourself a comfortable working spot to make your net. TV sofa at the right height or you end up with terrible backache. Stop when your start to make mistake ie miss a knot or slip knot and start fresh another day by correcting you mitakes and just potter on. When you have been make long nets for sometime it is possble to knit and watch corrie at the same time and the process is more feel than just sight and it is the concentation that makes it hard to make a long because it tires you out. It the looking and the fixing of mistake that p**s you off. If you can get past this and enjoy the knitting process and the knowledge that you will have a rabbit catching masterpeice and by your own fair hand ( well not by the end of it) at everyone of a like mind will be envious of then you have got it cracked. Regards Roger. Quote Link to post
