I am looking for a rabbit calibre for longer ranges (Out to about 150 yards) My brother had a .17HMR and I think it might me a waste getting another one. it might be a choice though I also looked at the .22WMR however I heard that ammo is expensive and hard t get hold of. I also have a friend who wants to sell his .22 Hornet for about £200 which I think would be a good fox calibre but ammo is hard to get What do you think? Dave Yeah, you really kicked one off on this. Shows it's a good question! I'd just say apply for a C/F from the start. Go for your fave rimfires but stick a C/F on top. Ye canna lose. When I get the FAC, I will immediatley buy the .22lr After A while I will buy the .223 and if I find the .22lr inadequate for longer ranges then I would get the .17HMR I don't think I am going to go down the reloading route. However I have heard about 55 grain .223 WOLF ammo that it SUPER cheap. Where can I get these? they might be a good choice for long range rabbit Dave I have about 400 I will happily sell you! salukiwhippet 6 Posted May 5, 2009 Report Share Posted May 5, 2009 I wouldn't rule out reloading mate, it' not that hard to do, and will save you a bundle in the long run. My hornet reloads cost me 24p each, that's about the same as (or less than) HMR ammo. My .243 is really ammo fussy, until I started reloading the best ammo for it was federal premium at £1.50 each!! A reloading set-up will be about £100, plus dies (£30 ish) and components: Primers £3 per hundred Powder £35ish a pound (does about 600+ hornet loads -will only do 300ish .223) Bullets - Nosler 40 grain BT's (quite expensive) are about £22 per hundred, hornady 35gn Vmax is £19 per hundred Cases - I neck size only and they last up to 10 reloads - my loads aren't that 'hot' - I scrounge fired cases off mates and keep the ones from any factory I fire. To buy I think they're about £22-£25 per hundred. You soon start saving, plus you can get better accuracy from homeloads as they're tailored to your rifle. James James Quote Link to post

karlp86 0 Posted May 6, 2009 Report Share Posted May 6, 2009 (edited) i've got a .22lr a .17hmr and a .223 and they all have there place. .22lr for close and quite bunnies .17hmr for long range crows and bunnies and .223 for even longer range bunnies and fox. put down .223 if you get one u'll love it. dialing in rabbits at 400yrds is very addictive. of all my rifles it's the one i take out the most. a pic's in my sig. atb karl Edited May 6, 2009 by karlp86 Quote Link to post
