Guest WILF
Now, my kids love birds and I was thinking of trying to find them a kestrel to keep........BUT.......what I dont want to do is be unfair to the bird. If a bird like this WOULD NOT be a good idea for kids to keep and learn to fly then I will leave well alone. Any advice welcome Cheers lads Quote Link to post
Guest MickyB
Hi WILF I would think a barn owl may be a bit better suited for the kids as they are so docile, and if hand reared are very very good to stroke and handle. Also they can be flown aswell, but i was thinking from the handling point of view they seem as good as can be for the kids, as the kestrels are a more active bird.. Quote Link to post

Any advice welcome Cheers lads Hi there, a kestrel is definitely not a bird to start off with especially for kids, although they get very tame after training they require very accurate weight management being a small bird and with out any previous knowlege of managing a birds weight its a disaster waiting to happen, one cold day with the bird even slightly underweight and it will be dead within a few hours, definitely agree a barn owl would be a good choice to go for under the circumstances you have mentioned, good luck. jasper65 6
There's a few wilf that kids can take up and enjoy! I kept back a male Harris a few years back for my lad who at that time was 10, he carried it about and fed it off the fist with me in tow and with a little weight reduction it was flying across the fields to him, he loved it for a while as did my Daughter until the X Box took him over , they also have a male Barn Owl here too called "Ozzy" He's soft as butter and tamer than the average budgie which they love to handle...... My kids being brought up and handled birds in the garden so their confidence was already sky high! some kids might be a bit shocked getting a male Harris on the glove for a first bird, the joy is you can take it out and fly it with the kids and catch the odd thing too!! my lad even at 10 loved watching the bird catch Rabbits..... If you ever want a Barney, Kestral or Harris PM me mate as I know people who breed the first two close bye Plus I have the Harris's here .... atb Jasp Quote Link to post

Hadnt thought of that.....and thats why I asked, if BOP really should be left to the big boys then I will leave well alone........they will have a few more finches and stuff, but I have to think hard before they get more than that. I would not feck a dog about and I am not about to start with a BOP..........need to make sure they will be serious about things Quote Link to post

Cracking birds JD! I had a few when I was a lad which would follow me everywhere. the first one I had would follow me to school and from house to house while on my fanny magnet fandango cow horned bike .... I still had a old Jackdaw when I met the wife in 88! I can't remember but I think it was about 7 then and lived well over 12, this thing diced with death on many occasions walking about on the Hawk aviarys ...... I've always had a fetish with birds mate! the feathered one's ain't bad either ..... Jasp Quote Link to post
