grew to breed

Recommended Posts

I have a whippet cross greyhound 2.5 yr old will be 3 yr old before next season, she's first cross, will chase anything from a leaf in the garden to a fox (I do believe).., only ever ran her on rabbit/long ears (accidental) and she's proven worker at that, besides the point my question is.. if i was to breed her, what cross from a whippet/greyhound X ? would you hunters/moochers be interestied in buying from your experience? question is.. Put in the position with this breed what would you put across her that you know would sell? As is i'm thinkin bull grey.. I would love to breed from her as she's an excellent worker in the field and loves to work, and i'd like to keep one back myself! Personally i would like to put another grew over her, but lads out there love the bull in a lurcher as they like ketchup on a burger!! sorry, but loads of bull around!! So i ask your advice in keeping a good working blood stream in the field to give me a good cross that wont leave me puppy's on my hands due to the girlfriend and her passion for pups but not older dogs.. Thanks for any replies..

ask your self how could you make the x better ? she will already have the speed but do you need bigger size ? stamina ? or brains ? and for what would you be hunting ? when you can answer them questions you will have a better idea what your looking for in a pup out of your bitch ;)

Thanks to the Good replies.. I'l take both into account. Personally all i hunt is rabbits never done anything else. Like i've said i'd like to see her cross with a whip/grey or colly/grey but its not only for myself, its to be what people will buy with proven working parents. Would you suggest a good lurcher mix maybe? Saluki? Keep them small for rabbiting? Any ideas welcome?

Personally i'd go for colly/grey/whip as stud or saluki/gray/whip

Hi mate had a collie/gery/ wippet. She was a great little dog and hard as nails.

I'd say anything but Saluki mate. But from what I read, you only hunt rabbit and the breeding in her does that job so why do you need a pup since she ain't much older herself?

I.M.O. You have enough speed to put in the mix with your own bitch, so somthing other than sighthound is needed..

My preference would be to add a bit of Bull they not only add a bit of Gameness but it adds brains too,

As you say you`ll only be doing rabbits, perhaps the addition of a rough coat for cold days ferreting and pushing through cover, a wheaton cross or Beddie cross could be good for that..

All that said, Now is not a good time to be breeding as Lurchers from what i can see just aint selling to well, and from the age of your bitch you still have a couple of good seasons in her before you need to think about a replacement, ample time to choose "The Right" stud dog.

Yis Mars..

LOL :D You were Quick to bite Chartpolski :clapper:

Yes Bull X lurchers do have brains, i`ve won a few obedience competions with mine, and found her easy to train.

Or Nightmans bitch from a couple of years back i hear he did quite well with her..

People look at a bull x lurcher in a certain way mainly because of "The Person" on the other end of the lead..

but if people took the time to train their dogs "As You Should" with any dog, then perhaps the Bull X could be seen as it should be seen "A Lurcher"

Yis Mars...
