Bleeding tumour

Recommended Posts

Well yesterday my old Australian Shepherd x greyhound Percy went off his food. This is not like him he is the biggest pig in the world and will eat anything. So I was concerned when he wouldn't get up and refused food.

Waited till this morning to see how he was doing, no improvement so took him into the vets and went off to work. Got a call a couple of hours later from the vet, he said Percy had a ruptured tumour on his spleen and was bleeding to death. Asked him what the prognosis was, he said that if it was only on the spleen it could be removed with the spleen and prognosis was very good. If it had spread anywhere else then they would put him down on the table. My vet is a good mate and has been coursing with Percy many times so I know he wont BS me. I gave him the go ahead to operate and then waited.

Got the call a few minutes a go that Percy was out of surgery. The tumour was only on the spleen and the surgery went well. But get this they removed two liters of blood from his abdomen and a 6lb Tumour!!!

My vet doesn't know how he was able to run alll last season and says I'm very lucky he didn't rupture in the field and bleed out. God knows how he managed to run and catch hares at nine years old carrying 10% of his weight in a tumour. He is one tough old dog, I thought I was going to lose him right before the first puppies he has sired were born. Which would have been rather ironic in a dark way.

Now if the bitch will just drop the pups this will be a up and down weekend to remember.

All the very best with your old dog Percy, nice to hear of some one who doesn't view their animals as dispensable when they start to age.Good luck with the litter and ATB.Inan

Thanks everyone, I will pick Percy up on Sunday and be $1000 lighter in pocket. After all the pleasure he's given me over the years it's a small price to pay. Luckily my vet is a mate so he knocked $2000 off the bill for me, it's nice to have a good vet connection when you have working dogs.

I put a ferret down last weekend that had cancer so I am very glad I didn't have a repeat today.

I glad the old fella is hanging in there, I was filled with saddness when I first saw and started reading this post thinking the worst. I lost my first saluki at 10 years the difference being his tumour had spread to his liver and I lost him. He too was still hunting hard 2 weeks before loosing him, regretably I missed my chance to get a line from my dog not expecting to loose him when I did.

So in short I'm really pleased you have yours pups on the way and hope Percy is recovering well which I'm certain he will as no doubt he is a tough old dog, best of luck on both counts.

Regards

Mark

Good on you for giving the old dog a chance. They are amazing animals though aren't they: makes you feel a bit guilty sometimes when you know they've been working their socks off with some unseen nasty lurking inside them: hope he comes good.

Hope he has a speedy recovery and all the best with the pups, we had a rottie 2 year ago which did the same thing went off her food then took her to vets they operated and rang me during to tell me that it was in her spleen and tummy so no chance she was only 5, heard a few dogs with this seems common, just as well you caught it sooner than later.

Percy is back home now, it will be about 3 weeks until he is back to normal as he is pretty anemic even after the blood transfusion. The vet thinks he had the tumour for about 9 months before it ruptured so I wouldnt say I caught very early I was just lucky. If it had spread from the spleen he wouldnt be here now.
