Seen GWP and GWP x saluki coursingx (CN Stud) work the land around my way (barren) and the lad (a true hunter posts on THL, posts pics etc) works top class land and swears by GWP dogs, from my limited knowledge they are awesome dogs very clever, great stamina, will only help a lurcher pup on.

YLH, get the lurcher bought, cos if you don't the fella who does might not give it 12 mile a day ;)

Anonymous, my post was from the heart mate, was not having a pop at you :) I take no offence at expierienced dog men questionong my posts, and motives (Strongstuff on this very thread) nice to see genuine dog men looking out for the interests of lurcher welfare B) but for sporting dogs to continue new blood will have come into it,

Your post was the best and most helpful post on here mate. Good luck with the dogs.

Hi,

Came into this section as im thinking of branching into lurchers, I already shoot, fish and own a dog (GSP) :clapper:

Don't really know much about them and was wondering what kind of books to read, people to meet etc etc.

I already have one dog and train him all the time, give him 4 hours (tiring :D )of exercise a day so another dog would not be a problem.

Any advice at all will be greatly thanked :D

thanks

Why do you want to branch into lurchers? You see, this I believe is the problem these days... Young folk take up lurchers on a whim. Unless its in your blood your gonna get fed up with them pretty quick. You wont put the time in to train a pup and if it doesn't come up to scratch, you'll get shot asap. My advice to you is to seriously think about using an animal to hunt with. It's ok having a fishing rod and a gun, both can be put away when bored with. I know you have a dog but that ain't nothing like owning a working dog for the sole purpose of hunting. Most lurcher work is done in foul weather, at unsavioury times of the day as well as year. If I was you, I'd go out with some folk before I'd commit.

:thumbdown::thumbdown:

all the best finding your lurchur mate, get your self a nice small rabbit dog like a 3/4 whippet 1/4 grey, theres loads off books online that will give you good info plus info on here, best bof luck!

Right been away for a few days so ghaven't seen this

Firstly i wake up at 6:00 raining or not every day to walk my dog, he does on average 12 miles a day

secondly, he was going to be a working dog but didn't make the grade :( but i still train him and i was thinking of using him in conjunction with the lurcher (good idea or not ?)

thirdly, i absaloutely love hunting and you can ask whippeter 69as i have been hunting with him, also been on the monachty shoot where there were aa lot of people on here

i was asking for some good books to read and some people to meet in the hampshire/sussex area to show me the ropes

NOT an argument

Go to www.anglebooks.com plenty of books to chose from there. You never said what you want from the book, i.e training, stories, etc. Unfortunately, like most things in life, you can only learn so much from a book as you will know if you are into fishing. Hunting is all about instinct and experiance. You can take someone out into the countryside and they'll not see a living thing, all the while you've seen hares, rabbits, deer, stoats etc. It's hard to explain but you can drive past some ground you've never been to before and instinctly you know it would be a great place to "walk" the dogs. Same as fishing I suppose. You'll see a bit of drag water behind a fast flowing river and know it will be holding a brownie. I still maintain you need to get out with folk before you buy a dog. I'd been out with lurchers for about 10 years before I got my first dog. Not suggesting you do this but I was too young to get one at the time. But when I finally got one, boy was it my pride and joy. NO WAY was ever going to give up!!!

i would say read as much as you can on here about the different crosses and their temperaments, try and figour out which one will suit you, that should take at least a couple of months, if you get bored ,or change youre mind before that, stick to fishing etc. :drink:

  • 3 weeks later...

as its aproaching christmas time was wondering if we could start this topic up again.

im ordering the Complete lurcher by brian plummer and was scouring the internet looking at breeds.

Met a guy down in cormwall who had some lovely little lurchers, and my mate's bedddyxwhippet is coming along nicely.

Have decided that either a beddyx or an acdx would be a lovely dog to get, any opinions ?
