shooter19 0
Hi,Came into this section as im thinking of branching into lurchers, I already shoot, fish and own a dog (GSP) Don't really know much about them and was wondering what kind of books to read, people to meet etc etc. I already have one dog and train him all the time, give him 4 hours (tiring )of exercise a day so another dog would not be a problem. Any advice at all will be greatly thanked thanks id say go for it if ya think you will really have the interest. dont mind the negative comments from some users!!! Quote Link to post
lurchergrrl 1,441
I got my first lurcher because I liked their looks and temperments. I'd always had dogs so ... I just went and got one. And since then I've done nothing but learn learn learn. Lean to appreciate their prey drive and work with it. Learn to climb barbed wire fences. Learn to put up with wind and rain and freezing weather and having numb toes. Learn to be ok about walking for so long I get lost. Learn how to neck a bunny. Learn how to spot things before the dog does so it doesn't all go pear shaped. Learn that these dogs can cover a shocking amount of ground in very little time and as such you really need to look waaaaaay ahead to foresee any problems or potential fun. It's all good If it appeals to you, and you know you will give the dog a good home, then why not? People like anonymous are for ignoring by the way. When you ask for advice on here you have to learn to pick and chose who you're going to pay attention to. There's quite a few wankers lurking round abouts. Quote Link to post

bullmastiff 615
Learn how to spot things before the dog does so it doesn't all go pear shaped! An important lesson for a newbie! It's that tight gut feeling you get as your out walking the dogs and something breaks cover then you see your new rescue lurcher heading flat out for a hedge, then crashing through and off over the hill. Usually in front of other walkers or the farm house in broad daylight! Thats when you realise quite how high their prey drive is and no amount of obedience training will call them off their chosen quarry!!! You can shout till your red in the face, wait quietly for your dog to return hoping no one saw it, or try to chase em up the hill to watch the rest of the course, although nine times out of ten the course is over (good or bad) by the time you get to the top!. End of the day once their chasing, your just a spectator! Quote Link to post

Guest anonymous
Do you know what I have to laugh at.... this guy made a post on the first of May at 6.30p.m. Not one of you so called great hunters bothered to answer the guy until I answered him 24, yes, 24 hours later. Then, ohh aye, it's time to shoot down old Anon because he has an opinion. None of you were interested in giving this guy the time of day, you are more interested in bringing down me, sad really. As for calling me an anti, WTF do you think you are? Prove from my posts I'm an anti clowns? As for some stupid wee lassie telling people that I'm a wanker, c'mon pleeeeeeeeease. Lurchers for 2 minutes and already they are full of it. Probably the family pet too, I dunno.......... I stand by what I said, if it wasn't for clowns wanting lurchers on a whim the sport would be in a better state than it is. Quote Link to post
lurchergrrl 1,441
Think of it this way: if someone is interested in these dogs, it's better for them to seek advice and put some thought into it than it is to go out and cock everything up. No? I think I appreciate what you're saying about the sport being in the state that it's in but that shouldn't stop people from wanting to get involved. In fact I think it's better that people who have a genuine interest get involved, and not just the chavvy types who go out and make a bloody mess of everything. Quote Link to post

Maybe I was a bit harsh on this guy but I just didn't like the way he worded his post and lets face it, that is all we can go with right? I'm also not the biggest fan of shooters.... lurchergrrl 1,441
It wasn't so much what you said anon as it was how you said it If more people would look further into it before doing it things would be much better for everyone. Quote Link to post
Guest anonymous
I agree with you anon. Too many people take up dog work on a whim. It would'nt matter if it were any other type of hobby, except with this type of 'hobby' dogs lives are involved without any thought to their wellbeing.Good advice to go out with someone else in the bleak midwinter, to see if it is really your cup of tea first Good Golly Miss Molly!!! Agreeing with me... people will talk. I'm glad you actually read what I wrote, makes a change on here.... I dunno if it's too good you agreeing with me since I've been branded an Anti and your a tree hugger lol. But hey, when needs must.. Quote Link to post

arcticgun 4,548
Seen GWP and GWP x saluki coursingx (CN Stud) work the land around my way (barren) and the lad (a true hunter posts on THL, posts pics etc) works top class land and swears by GWP dogs, from my limited knowledge they are awesome dogs very clever, great stamina, will only help a lurcher pup on. YLH, get the lurcher bought, cos if you don't the fella who does might not give it 12 mile a day Anonymous, my post was from the heart mate, was not having a pop at you I take no offence at expierienced dog men questionong my posts, and motives (Strongstuff on this very thread) nice to see genuine dog men looking out for the interests of lurcher welfare but for sporting dogs to continue new blood will have come into it, atvb Richard Quote Link to post
