young_london_hunter 9
Hi, Came into this section as im thinking of branching into lurchers, I already shoot, fish and own a dog (GSP) Don't really know much about them and was wondering what kind of books to read, people to meet etc etc. I already have one dog and train him all the time, give him 4 hours (tiring )of exercise a day so another dog would not be a problem. Any advice at all will be greatly thanked thanks Quote Link to post

Any advice at all will be greatly thanked thanks Why do you want to branch into lurchers? You see, this I believe is the problem these days... Young folk take up lurchers on a whim. Unless its in your blood your gonna get fed up with them pretty quick. You wont put the time in to train a pup and if it doesn't come up to scratch, you'll get shot asap. My advice to you is to seriously think about using an animal to hunt with. It's ok having a fishing rod and a gun, both can be put away when bored with. I know you have a dog but that ain't nothing like owning a working dog for the sole purpose of hunting. Most lurcher work is done in foul weather, at unsavioury times of the day as well as year. If I was you, I'd go out with some folk before I'd commit. Quote Link to post

poacher3161 1,766
just go and do it if your heart tell you to should have a good team with a lurcher and a gsp.Best book to get is understanding the working lurcher by jackie drakeford.atvb Quote Link to post
Malt 379
As long as you know how to handle a dog, a lurcher shouldn't be a problem. Any dog is what you make it, you just have to get it to understand what you want it to do. A dog will do anything that's asked of it, if you & the dog know each other's place. Do your own thing by yourself, and don't worry if you do something different to others, it doesn't matter as long as it works for you. You know what you want a dog to, you just have to learn to get it across to the dog. PS. (If that don't make sense, it's because I'm having a few jars waiting for the Hatton fight! ) Quote Link to post

arcticgun 4,548
Hi,Came into this section as im thinking of branching into lurchers, I already shoot, fish and own a dog (GSP) Don't really know much about them and was wondering what kind of books to read, people to meet etc etc. I already have one dog and train him all the time, give him 4 hours (tiring )of exercise a day so another dog would not be a problem. Any advice at all will be greatly thanked thanks Im a late starter with lurchers, 37 y.o., had dogs , springers etc all my life, always been into shooting, love the outdoors etc, etc, always fancied having a lurcher, couldn't as a kid as my mum fell ill the year my dad gave in and said i could get one (cleaned up a lot of spaniel $hit , cleaned many cars etc for that privilage), however on reflection owning one younger would have been a mistake, cause we all end up spending many years chasing lasses, drinking , making babies , buyng houses etc, and old hobbies fall behind, guns in loft, rods in garage, dogs in pounds. Finally talked the missuss round last year, got my beddy xgrey 2 month later my salukix, now my gun is gone (sold)!! I rarely go climbing (except work), spend loads of time with the dogs walking, training etc, cannot get enough of it. In short mate its your choice, go for it , as long as you know in your heart, that even if you do get sick of running/hunting with it you will still give it a home for life. Its hard work, frustrating at times, but ultimately very rewarding, its magic watching your dog do what you want it to do (what it is designed for), i can replay every catch my dog has made so far in my mind, pure magic, breathtaking , cannot wait to get them out tomorow . Good luck if you decide to go ahead, drakefords book is one of the better ones , be prepared to end up with calves like house bricks, get some decent wellies, and a good waterproof and an understanding wife atb Richard Edited May 4, 2009 by arcticgun Quote Link to post

Not trying to misquote you, but that sounds like when you got bored with your dogs you gave them to a dogs home? Surely not? Quote Link to post

Not trying to misquote you, but that sounds like when you got bored with your dogs you gave them to a dogs home? Surely not? thats the net, and late night typing, poor secondry education no mate I didn't, the springers where my old ladies, she bread them, I used to walk and help train them (clear up the s#ite), they went to my sister and dad kept one as well, once she died. I couldn't part with a dog, my mate who is areal dogman reckons i don't have the heart to be a 'real Dog man, ie, if it don't work its gone etc etc, and if Im honest I don't, I like the dogs I have and they will have a home for life regardless of what they do in the field, they will keep me happy simple because I have no expectations, everything they do right is a bonus to me, they really cannot lose, but I also know if I put enough in myself I won't be dissapointed! early indications are good thank god hope that clears that up atvb Richard ps, i lost both the slip lead si bought off you (and about 6 others whilst out mooching about, good stuff though ) PPS, my daughter likes the saluki far better than she likes her dad, so getting rid of sly arse isn't happening any day soon Edited May 3, 2009 by arcticgun Quote Link to post
