cant remember the full equasion but its something like speed xweight of projectile wich gives ft lbs energy at approx 8ft from the mussel energy will deminish over distance

If your gun can break the 12ft/lbs mark with any pellet then it would need to be on an FAC. i.e if you don't have an FAC then it's illegal.

I made up an excell spreadsheet where you enter the fps and pellet weight and it tells you the ft/lbs.

Cheers for all replys, I wanted to convert it to find out how much power an airsoft gun kicks out (my mates into it and i said to get a real air rifle) As far as i know it has to be under 1ft/lb or not break the skin.
