2 foxes,1 shot.

Recommended Posts

hi guys.

a while ago now i was out lamping with my dad and across the valley in a stubble field two sets of eyes were bouncing around the field. knowing that it was foxes we flanked them to create a safe backstop. when my dad put the lamp on you could see 1 fox out in the middle of the field at about 90 yards so i straight away lined up for a chest shot as the fox was sat upright looking at us ,but just as i was about to fire the shot a silhouette moved into the field of view directly behind the fox i was aiming at after waiting a second i could see it was another fox so i lined up again and fired and down he went. as we drove the truck up to the fallen, a fox got up and started struggling across the field the truck immediately stopped and i head shot the fox as it moved across the field. so we went and picked it up and found an obvious headshot and a exit at the back of the ribs my dad ws surprised at this and it turned out he was unaware of what i had done. i explained to him that this was the fox at the back and there was another one dead that had ben sat in front. so on went the lamp and 20 yards away was another dead fox. this was done with a 22.250 firing 50 grain remington ballistic tips. had this been with a 100 grain soft point iam sure the back fox would have been dead on the spot.

anyone ever done or heard of this happening??

gossy.

To me it would appear that you have tried to shoot two Foxes at once with the same bullet and the highly frangible Ballistic tip has not penetrated through the second Fox suffice enough to kill it and so it got up wounded.

That's how it read to me too, very irresponsible. Foxes may be pests but they deserve a quick death too. Actions like this endanger shooting for us all.

i understand what your saying. however i do not see the difference between someone stating in a topic that they gave a deer a perfect heart shot which then ran 30 yards and dropped and me shooting a fox and it running on for a short distance. prehaps i did not make this clear in my original post the fox was hit with a fatal shot and although was shot agen was realy not going to go much further. very sorry if this offended some readers.

The confusion seems to have come from you mentioning two Foxes, Gossy.

If you could explain where the second Fox came from, if indeed there was one ;)

To me, it read as though you had lined up one Fox and then a second came along behind it and came into line. You then fired at both and expected them both to drop.

Correct me if I'm wrong ;)

as it mentions there where 2 foxes in the field when we got there one was clearly visible as it was looking at us the second then walked in behind this one and being fairly new to shooting at the time i took the shot. the front fox was killed instantly and the back fox moved on a small distance which was then dispatched. having known what i no know( 50 grain bullets break up very quickly) i would have not taken the shot. i understand that we as shooters have a duty to ensure our quarry is despatched as quickly and humanely as possible and prehaps now after hearing your views that this can be put more into prospective that it was not a spectacular event but more a mistake on my part.

Not foxes but i was out shooting rabbits about four months ago and seen three rabbits in the corner of the field approx 250yds so i drove slightly closer about 100yds or so, put the cross hairs on the rabbit and i could see the second about 10ft behind it hopping around, I waited a second or two and both were in the view so pulled the trigger and both fell, picked them up and the round had pasted through both necks. chuffed !!! two birds with one stone!!!
