what age should he start

Recommended Posts

im very new to the game myself and the advice i got was to start him on his own on rabbits at about ten months but not much work till hes atleast a year. dont rush him into it and try not to run him with another dog until he can do it on his own and not dependent on other dog. i just lost my dog to doubleing up and will never do it again.

Hope you find your dog mate :icon_eek: I reckon the biggest mistake anyone does with a young dog is impatience. Whether this is starting him too young, expecting too much from him or running him into the quick. Nothing worse than someone only having a pup and nothing else.... Leads to problems me thinks. I know what your thinking... wont happen to me but guess what, if you have the hunting bug and that dog shows signs of knowing whats what, ................. :whistling:

i think every dog is different, my pup has already had her 1st buny on the lamp, she is 6 month old, which she took with ease and retrieved the rabbit live to hand, but i had to find the suitable place to give her the 1st run, somewere were there is rabbit fencing around the field is ideal to start pups of, but then again some dogs aint ready for the 1st run until alot older than 6 month, good luck

how old is your pup mate?

i start mine at about 7 month old watching experienced dogs run in the lamp.

then a month or so later with lamp training .

,you have to read the dog and how it responds ,little easy runs with squatters.

then i go from there to day time , walking on the slip so you can choose the runs.

and if you know your dog you will know when its ready.

hope this helps mate,

diffrent people have diffrent ways

but for me its all about knowing your own pup.

6 month like it says, the pup is very mature for its age, and by that i dont mean am pushing the pup in the slightest, total agree that you have to read the pup, some i wouldnt start untill 10month, but this bitch was very good out hunting and mooching, so thats why ive let her have her 1st run, the place were she has had her 1st run is the best place to start pups, grass field with no obstacles in the way, the rabbits run up and down the fencing for so long that a 3 legged terrier could catch in the dark lol

sorry lurcher lad,i meant to be asking shooter how old his pup was..

not you pal.

you should be out walking dog now get it used to following you around, going over dykes through or over fences ect,i find the more pups get used to finding way through country less likely to get selves hurt when there older, there shouldnt be any need for dog with that breeding to see other dogs working when a rabbit runs it will follow. running young dogs with other dogs is the quick way of ruining it in my veiw.a year old is best if you must start earlier take it easy and always stop with a catch.this is what i do with my pups and they will still be working and catcin when the fast starter as long been retired or jibbed.
