hi all, ive just got a 1yr old cocker and need some advise on how to train him for the beating line. i took him for a walk down the local nature reserve when we got home and ive never seen a dog so mental before! he was running in and out of the thickest bushes, jumping in the water without giving it a second thought (shame he wasnt the same going in the bath) and generaly acting like he had a rocket up his arse. i was expecting a hyper dog but f**k me this dogs on speed! anyway any advise will be good, like is it ok for me to feed him raw meat/offal? as ive herd it better for the dog

cheers kiy

HI Kiy its not wise to take on a pup at one year old only if you know its history or the seller has told you the truth about the pup ie part traind or not touched. anyway dont let the pup have its freedom untill you can control it with the basics if you can control it in your garden then you have a chance with it on the outside but be warned give a cocker half a chance to be disobedient it will be and thats the start of a slippery slope.trainers do let spanials have their head and allow them to hunt freely but this is done in a controled enviroment like a rabbit pen and mostly when a pup is is timid or has little conferdence. but your little cocker don't seem to be that way so basics in a controled area before letting this little rocket into the wide open spaces. just my take on this so good luck.

he has basic training like a house pet and comes when called, sits etc. ill be getting a long lead in a couple of days but will focus on walking to heal and basic sit commands until i get the lead. he hasnt been docked, is it really nessesary to have this done? and is there a age limit where after you cant do it?

If he has a full tail leave it alone mate and only time will tell if this will effect him later on as it depends what type of cover he is hunting, to be honest mine has a full tail and hunts alot of bramble and gorse and has had no trouble, but others can have a real bad time of it.

Go back to basics with his training so you then know what training he has had and get as much into him as you can, if he is looking like he is loosing his head a bit make him sit and stay until he calms down.

Get yourself a good gundog book or DVD on training and just work your way through it, he is at a good age to start so just take you time and little and offtern is the key.

Best of luck mate.

Dave.

£25 - £30 is right price.

I've had a lot of lessons with trainers and god one's are worth every penny. Going to one who deals with mainly cockers is the best because they is a huge difference between them & springers at times.

id like to take him to a trainer but id only be able to take him every 2 weeks as im signing on at the mo, would that be enough or does he need to go every week? ill look up those books/dvd for now though. we went for a walk down wollaton park today and let him off his lead....BIG MISTAKE! he ran off chasing the geese, caught a crow by the arse and carried him around for a while the jumped in the lake and swam for about 5 mins chasing more geese! :wallbash: all the time im calling his name and looking like a right muppet :icon_redface: eventually he came back soaking wet and very smelly  all i can say is that i wont be making that mistake again, he'll be kept on his lead til we get the recall sorted altough i like letting him off as it tires him out quicker

the tail shouldnt be a problem at all.my bitch has a full tail.the length of the working cockers docked tail isnt much different, you only take a bit off.they do get upto all kinds of mischieve if you let them,my bitch is a little thief but she knows she is in the wrong, still does it anyway, start from the beginning, walking with the lead and simple commands.hope it all works out, atvb

You don't have to see the trainer every week. A good trainer will give you some lessons to do between each session. As I lived a long way away from the person I wanted to train with he gave me enough info to last me & the dog a month before we seen him next.

You can of course use the books / dvd & then go to the trainer if you hit a problem. (that always cheers them up!!!)
