Ferreting

Hi i've been ferreting 5 or 6 times this season, but have only had 2 rabbits. I have permission on quite a few farms and each time i go i never seem to get anything. The ferrets go down and work the holes well but no luck, am i doing something wrong? The holes all look well used??

In my experience, holes that look the most likely, aren't always the ones that hold rabbits. It's the ones out of the way in the thick stuff that seem to hold.

 

Our catch rate has improved since we've added dogs to our team, there's no substitute for a dog that marks reliably IMO.

I walked my old dog through a wood my mate had been ferreting last year and he said he couldn't find any even though the holes looked good and the dog marked all the shitty ones full of leaves to my mates surprise. The holes that look the best never seem that productive round here.

I often find that the most unlikely looking holes usually hold a few where as the well used looking holes can be dead! Near the end of the season, we netted a set with about 3 dozen holes, all looked well used and fresh droppings outside etc, 6 ferrets, 45 minutes, not a sausage, one of the younger blokes had moved further up and netted a small set of 4 holes that looked dead and full of leaves, it was our last set of the day and we used one young ferret, Ruby....10 miniutes later....another 5 in the bag!

does anyone else have permission on the same farms, your well used holes, may have been ferreted hours/days before you got there

 

cant really tell if your doing anything wrong, without seeing you ferret, prehaps adding your location, someone may offer you a days ferreting, or you could invite them to yours,

I'd the same last year a wee wood full of hole's i got six rabbits farmer could'nt believe it as i didn't do the burrows the dog walked past .Tried one in front of him got nought

i have got some permission and ever time i go the bunnies are allways out feeding i can never catch them in and im not allowed dogs or guns with me

Yes just waiting for the ferret to surface each time, usually only goes down for a couple of mins then surfaces from another hole, Is that what i should be doing?

2 Jills are just under a year old and 2 jills and a hob are a couple of years old.

No no peg marks that i can see, i do use dogs, got a deerhound x greyhound and a beddy x whippet, it's my first season ferreting so i'm just learning the basics

im looking after a hob for me bro when i put him down a hole he wil pop his head out another then back down he goes he will chek evrywhere he only seem to comes out all the way when iv mooved the nets

my old salukixwhippet was unreal at marking up she used to run round the sett and pull them out the holes before they evan goy out the holes lol if you dont belive i carnt prove it now she dead but ask coursing mad on here he has seen her do the daftest things lol

Your two older jills and hob should be doing the business mate the two younger jills are still on a learning curve

I dont think you can do anything wrong with ferreting. Make sure ur netting the holes well enough and findin most of the bolt holes to net up aswell cos this will b a factor of loosing bolting rabbits wich makes u gutted even more.

Rabbits are really stubborn aswell i have realised they will take some stick before bolting. Maybe your just out of luck at the moment. Try another spot that u know no1 could really find to ferret before you.
