maty j 6
found a bitch pup that is of this breeding. just wondering what peoples opinions are of this type of dog? the mums 12 and has been breed from this mating before and he said something about them taking 4/4 hares but im a touch sceptical, but he allso said that he has got them running on video. going to be used for rabbit (ferreted, lamped, bushed) perhaps the odd fox (bushed, lamped) and retreiving shot game aswell. ive read alot about saluki types not retreiving, being disobedient and stupid yet allso some that say the oposite. is this just down to too the amount of training you put in? thanks maty. dickyboy 1
saluki aren't stupid but they are very single minded in my opinion, and aren't people pleasers like collies etc I think there would be dogs better suited to your needs.......salukis, greyhounds and whippets aren't reknowned for there retrieving instincts, i'm not saying they won't but as far as shot game is concerned it'll be an uphill struggle.....i'm sure people will tell me i'm wrong but its not what they were bred for its a bonus if the dog of that breeding likes to retreive. for wht your talking about i would of thought more of a lurcher is what you want and less of a sighthoundx/longdog. Have you thought about bull x, or collie cross or bedlington x?? or my personal favourite a pointer x!!! Quote Link to post
dodger 2,751
My old bitch was very good for rabbiting weather on the lamp'fereting or having a mooch she was exceptionatley keen and very' very obedient. She was saluki-grey-wippet-grey.If you bring your pup on right and train her for what you want her to do thers no reason why she woudn't be capable of making a decent rabbiting dog.A good cross for allsorts in my eyes good luck. maty j 6
just been to see the pups. they look healthy in them selves, werent too keen to come and see me but when they did they went under my legs, probably to keep out of the sun? when i stood them up the tail was between there legs and one was abit clumsey on its feet. the fella said they were coming away from there mum at around 3weeks!! and were on dry permanantly at about 7 weeks. the mum looked healthy, saggy tits still. she came out to see me. everything seemed clean im just worrying about them coming off the milk so young. there 50 quid each which i was wondering why but the fellas dog from the same mating killed himself before so he wants another dog so perhaps he just wants rid?? the time they were away from the mam and the fact that they were scared im a bit worried. what do you think?? i saw what he said were the previous brothers and sister running and catching hares but you cant be sure can you. Have you thought about bull x, or collie cross or bedlington x?? or my personal favourite a pointer x!!! Ageed that Saluki x Greyhounds might not be your ideal choice for a retrieving dog but personally all the saluki crosses i've had and worked with have all been decent retrieving dogs. My dogs are saluki lurcher so the retrieving and general obiedience could be said to be from lurcher blood, but my good friend has a 3/4 saluki 1/4 greyhound, which retrieves 100% both fur and feather. Also a dog i had for a while of the same breeding (3/4 Saluki 1/4 Greyhound) picked up the retrieving game pretty quick. He was 4 years old and wouldn't jump or retrieve but after a summer of steady training he began to do both of these skills pretty well. As for working to the gun, my pups are always started on the lamp working to the gun. From been 8 months old they will be taken on the lamp and allowed to retrieve the shot rabbits. This i think really builds up a dogs confidence as well as improving it's retrieveing skills. All the best Tommy Quote Link to post
dickyboy 1
glad to hear someone else shoots rabbits in the lamp i have been and didn't know if it was wrong to do as he doesn't hit them hard so they shhot off and he loses them(my mate only pricked a few)lol Admitedly the people i know who have saluki x's don't really put the effort in they like them to retrieve but there mainly deer and hare and fox men so not so bothered about retreiving........i think any dog can be trained to do anything if you put the time in??? Guest whitser
i've a bedlingtonxwhippetxsalukixgrhound. he's not a good retriever, im hoping that will improve over the coming lamping season. he caught a few rabbits last year on the lamp and he copped on very quick what lamping was about. he was only one in march and i only started lamping him softly after xmass. so this will be a bigger year from him,i hope. i,ve heard men curse full salikis as being tempremental and a bit dopy. but a touch of saluki seems to add a good coursing brain, my dog works his rabbits and rarely overshoots them by much if at all. i saw a whippetxgrhound lamping last season and was very impressed. TOMO 26,005
out in the middle east were saluki's come from, they are trained to retrive the desart hare alive so they can kill it ( ritual slaughter, halal) and these are pure saluki's Quote Link to post
skinnyrat 0
had a sal x whippet x grey myself,22 1/2",was obedient enough(my standards arnt that high)and retrieved well enough, and was a cracking rabbit dog,my only complaint was it was a skinny looking thing,as a lot of saluki blooded dogs are,and kids used to shout after me,why dont you feed your dog mister, lol Quote Link to post
