Why? Do you think reading to the bitch will ease the birth?

She could drop the pups a couple of days either side of her due date, have plenty of newspapers available as they are easy to red up. You'll know when their on there way as she will become really restless not sittin at peace, burling round and round ripping up newspaper trying to make a nest for the pups, also she might be of her food and she may empty her bowels before the big event. When the first one is here there may be about 20 mins apart for the next, sometimes quicker and sometimes up to an hour , any longer may be cause for concern and if in doubt phone the vet for advice. Watch out for a breeched pup it may need assistance by gently pulling it every time she has a contraction, she may not eat straight after she delivers as the afterbirth is a meal in itself. Once you think she has deivered all of the pups have a feel of her belly to make sure its soft and there is no dead pups left inside her, make sure the pups are all suckling and everything should be ok. Best of luck with the pups and if in any doubt pm me and I will try and help you. All the best! Neil

Thank you VERY much neil I am really greatfull. Will the bitch let me touch her (to feel her tummy). Sorry for being a pest but we all have to learn at some point . Once again thank you, you have given me very valuable advice.

Not being funny or unkind, but if you have very little idea of what to do (you ask if the bitch will let you feel her tummy) then I'd advise getting in touch with your vet to let them know that you have a bitch expecting pups: that way if there is a problem then they'll be ready to help if needs be.

Now rush out and buy The Book of the Bitch: ASAP! Read it from cover to cover at least 6 times and use if as your bible: it is one of the best books about pregnancy, whelping etc.

Make sure you have lots of newspaper, clean towels and a heat lamp or radiator depending on whether the bitch is kenneled or in the house: if she's kenneled then you need to be able to sit in the kennel with her in case she needs you with her. YOu want to be able to sit with the bitch in T shirt and jeans (or whatever you wear LOL): that is the temperature she and the newborn pups need. I'm right down south but its bloody cold here tonight and if I was whelping a bitch tonight I'd want her under a heat lamp.

Once she starts whelping stay near her throughout the whole process, but don't interfere unless you know what your'e doing. If she seems to be having problems then phone your vet: they will give you advice over the phone.

Best of all: find someone who lives near you who has had experience whelping bitches before and keep their phone number on you at all times.

Dogger's advice is spot on,but if youre' a first timer then pulling pups out of the bitch needs to be done with great care: pulling gently downwards rather than straight out. Once again, if you think there is a problem then PHONE YOUR VET: more harm than good can be done by you if you aren't experienced in helping bitches whelp.

Feeling for more pups inside is a dodgy business and the swollen uterus means that it isn't easy feeling if there is a pup still tucked up under the ribs, for example.

Thank you skycat I cant thank you and neil enough for the advice. I will phone the vet and inform them also my friend the farmer wife along the road she was a vet nurse so if need be i will phone her. I didnt want to ask her all the question as you can imagine they are rushed off their feet with the lambing. She will be indoors in my back pantry I have picked up a whelping box today for her Also have suspended a heat lamp above for when needed. (i have this from rearing my chicks) Thank god i had two as i have just had chick hatched tonight too.

I will try and get the book you mention in time for when she is due.

I will start saving up the news paper from now i have just got a washable cover that i was going to use for inside the whelping box and also have 1 for changing when im washing the other one.

You should worm her 2 weeks before she`s due,it`ll reduce the worms in the pups.Good luck.
