i have a lurcher, whippetxbedlingtonxsalukixgreyhound, 15 months old. i started lamoing him at xmass just an odd slip at first then more and more by march he mas catching between four and six out ten on average which i was happy with, for a young dog. But since the lamping finished he only gets the odd chase in the evening when the terriers bolt them from cover but he hasn't managed to nab one. in fact he's missed them all. he seems to be just unlucky cos he runs them well. Has the fact that he only ran them at night effectd him or is he just the unluckiest lurcher in ireland?

One of mine runs like a demon on the lamp, but daytime bunnies is totally different. She seems to be 'watching them'...its weird, running along side them like she is waiting for them to make a change of direction etc instead of just striking at them, yet at night she strikes with such force she does summersaults...i cant figure it out at all

i would,nt worry to much, this time of year there,s to much cover ,your best bet is to wait till september, and take your dog ferreting it will gain more experience of the rabbits ways and have more chance of catching.taking your dog out with your terriers bushing is ok,but its very rare you get a chance of a decent run for your dog as the runs are usually from cover to cover.have plenty of patience and in time your dog should start catching.regards collie john.

Don't forget at night you are surprising the rabbit with the lamp, in the daytime they can see you and don't move far from home. If they do, it is via cover and bramble patches.

Try for a couple of walks, keeping the dog on a lead as sometimes they are that keen they are ahead of the terriers etc and never cotton on to what is required. Good dogs in my opinion potter around when hunting rabbits in the daytime and put the speed on when needed.

Its easy to say keep at it but if the dog gets failure after failure ,in the end it may quit running rabbits in daylight .Its very frustrating to see apparently catchable rabbits avoid the dog but they are after all running to survive. It will probably happen when you least expect it .Good luck .

Never underestimate the humble coney  ......Find a nice peaceful field with a few hundred rabbit holes and stick a ferret down :good: ...The more runs the dog gets the better it will get...

They will get there in the end..

:good:
