Guest traceyg
Need some advise please. I have about 45 chickens all last year and this year pullets . They were laying about 30 eggs per day But now they have gone down to about 12/15 a day Is this anything to do with giving them to much bread .They have corn and maize daily . thanks T/G
Nige69 0
Hi, yeah I have found that bread does effect egg numbers not sure why other than it hasnt got the necessary nutrients etc in it to promote egg laying - i am able to get slightly stale bread frre from a bakers and so started to give it to my hens and found egg numbers dropping off after about a week -so stopped giving them the bread and stuck with layers pellets and egg numbers came back up. So now they only get an occasional bit of bread as a treat cos they do like it I guess it must fill them up quickly like it does us humans? So I would stear clear if I were you, hope this helps, Nige.

Nige69 0
Just give them some mixed corn once or twice a week as a treat and any greens or chickweed or dandelion leaves this time of year are good
m.hubbard 1
hi all bread is pritty bad for chickens and you will find thay will stop or slow down on laying eggs . all thay really need is a good old layers mix either mash or pellets . iv just had my friends chicks on a fast as thay ware not laying from to much food as thay are allotment with everyone feeding them bread and veg plus what he was giving them there normal layers mash . what happens is that just get to fat and have trouble laying just like a fat person would going for a sh**te but carnt . if you want the chicks to lay again just put them on a fast for a few days to burn the fat off and slowly bring them back on layers and you should have happy chicks. .m
ghillies 209
maybe nothing to do with the bread issues but... have the rats moved in? they take a few and the odd one takes to feeding there a while, see's a chook, then just rams under it in a frenzie..reapeadedly all night. puts um off laying a bit. sarg1 0
also advise worming them if you hadn't already. Plus check for red mite. Both of these can effect egg laying
