Out for rabbits, but got Charlie instead

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

took out the 22 for a bit of bunny bashing. They were all very shy, but a young dog fox walked up the hedge line to me. I was well hidden with my arse in the hedge, and had time to change from Eley subs to Velocitors.

One shot through the engine room and down he went. Got up, staggered a few yards, then went down for good.

I've always been a bit nervous about 22 on foxes, but this went straight through him at about 80 yards. Very noisy though.

Effortless.

This is the situation I've mentioned a few times, incidental charlies. Your ticket suggests you're not to shoot them on .22, but the fox never argues

Well, what do you guys think...

This is condition number 8 on my FAC...

"The .22 rifle and sound moderator and ammunition shall be used for shooting VERMIN and for zeroing on ranges, or land deemed suitable by the chief offiier of police for the area where the land is situated and over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot."

Are foxes legally classed as vermin? The FAC condition gives me permission to shoot vermin, and I have written permission from the land owner.

All pukka, or not??

Effortless.

And here we go again! :)

Foxes are GENERALLY (but not always!) licensed separately from vermin. Most people classify them as vermin, I certainly do. I've posted several times the breakdown on this one, but if you JUST have rimfire (i.e. no item on your ticket says FOX and vermin) then you're OK, as to prove you guilty of an offence the Crown would have to prove that foxes aren't vermin, which they can't do. This is different if you have another firearm which does list fox, as by implication, the fact that your 22RF DOESN'T say fox means that it's not covered. All down to semantics and very pointless.

Practical point - I'd not switch ammo, the Velocitors do pack more punch, but they are notoriously inaccurate. I have also shot Charlie at that sort of range, and with a subsonic, and it works just fine. Personally I'd go with the head though.

no, as someone else said they're separate, my new .17 HMR slot says vermin and foxes separately...

Ah yes, but that is YOUR FAC. Each one is different, and when talking about the legality of this, the ONLY one that matters is the FAC of the fox shooter. Everyone else's, and every other bit of argument, is completely irrelevant.

Jackwhite - I would agree that your Force does include fox with vermin, and if that is what your ticket says then legally you can shoot them anyway for reasons I have already ascertained.

Please note, while I am 100% convinced this is the case, if you are in any doubt do NOT take my word - check it with your Force, and get it in writing. This needs a test case to settle - do you want to be that?
