salukies can be stubborn but its down to the prey drive in em alot of the time contrary to popular belief they are highly intelligent how else could yhey course like they do boxing a strong hare anticipating his every move like they do goalkeeping him away from cover boxing him to stop start like they do and the supreme strike that they have these are not the actions of a dull dog these are the actions of a highly intekkigent animal that can think for itself and not wait to be told what to do like a lot of other dogs look at the mental fortitude of these dogs youve got to have a certain amount of stubborness to be able to course strong hares for some times 5mins or more

you will always get some boys saying my dog would have knocked that over in a couple of bends those boys have never been coursing

One days hunting sticks in my mind from this last season. I went out on area of desert a few miles south of where I live. I was out for one hour and caught two hares with my lurchers, as I was heading back I ran into a bunch of guys running their salukis. They had been out for four hours with eight salukis on the same ground. Score Zero!

The also told me the good news that one of their friends had just got their saluki back on the same ground after five days missing. Maybe I'm missing out on the fabulous saluki experience I could be having. But I have yet to see a saluki that would persuade me I just have to have one, and I have the ground and climate perfectly suited to one.

I have only blanked once on this area of land and the hares are tough, someone running on that land at least 3 times a week. There are no easy hares on this field. That day the salukis ran 5 hares got nothing I ran 2 for 2. they may have had bad luck but luck had nothing to do with my success.

dirtwinger, I know nothin about running jack rabbits but I have heard from people that have traveled all over the world running them buggers and they say that running down around where you live is the ultimate test of a hare dog. I aint sayin cause I am tryin to be smart, I am sayin it cause thats what those who have hunted just about everywhere in the world have told me.

Maybe if they had their salukis out more like you do they would run as well as your. Saluki owners over in the US always have kennels full of dogs, the fact that they had 8 salukis says it all if they ran less dogs the ones they had would get more experience and run better.

Dan there are some good hares down my way thats for sure. Iv'e seen plenty of poor ones too but they dont last long usually. Certain areas are touted as having the toughest hares in the US at least. But everyone likes to make that claim about their local area. I have hunted hares in Central Europe, the UK and now the US. I have coursed four species of hare at this point in my life and I dont know which is the toughest, they all bring something to the table. I think it depends on the ground, the individual hare, the dogs and the luck of the day.

I usually run 4 to 6 times a week many of the saluki folk run once a month so theres some truth in that. The guys who are really hardcore out here mostly run saluki x greys. But as I said in an earlier post there are some good imported desertbred bloodlines out here, so we have dogs with the potential to be stars. I think the thing for me is I dont like chases that dissapear over the horizon. Out here in the open desert a saluki can run a hare for 5 miles until its exhausted then kill it. I expect my dogs to start turning it within a 1/4 mile, some of my chases go a couple of miles but it back and forth running. Most of the hares I run are caught before the point of exhaustion, those that escape find cover or go down holes.

Next season I will try and get out more and watch some salukis run maybe I will change my tune then.

i own a salukix and two pure saluki pups,my salukix is 5 years old now and has done everthing i have asked of him,but i will never forget the day i picked him up and i saw his father he was a stunning full saluki, and since that day i have always wanted one,but the job ive had over the last few years ment i only had time for my salukix, the job i have now allows me a lot more free time which is why i have got two pure pups now, they are only 20wks old but are showing real potential, they are jumping well and are retreaving a rabbit skin to hand, these dogs are far from thick as some people say and if they ever own a well bred saluki they may well look back and correct there post's, :whistling:.as you can see i dont own a full saluki over 2 years old but i can tell you these dog i have will only leave me when they die. :cray: atb chris

I guess I shouldnt forget that without saluki enthusiasts there would be no saluki crosses out there. And if there weren't folks like yourself running pure salukis we would only have show stock to breed from. So good luck and keep salukis working as they were meant to be. Weather we run a saluki or not the coursing scene benefits from them. No one can deny they are beautiful dogs, good luck with your pups.
