Adam-RunningDog 1
Well my mother and brother chose the pup for us to keep and it is a blue dog and they chose it because its dopey i didnt have a bloody say in it because i already got myself a lurcher. but the one they chose is dopey as f**k when i stand by the pen every pup runs to me apart from him and the same with everyone else he does have his odd mad five minutes. but he just seem too dopey to do anything and to be honest i am worried that he is going to grow up to a dopey thick dog which i wont be able to work. is this the case has anyone ever come to this problem all the other pups seem to be switched on apart from mine. what do it do or just hope for the best ? DONT BITE MY HEAD OFF AGAIN IF I SAID SOMETHING TO OFFEND YOU Quote Link to post

DONT BITE MY HEAD OFF AGAIN IF I SAID SOMETHING TO OFFEND YOU My pattie was as dopie as anything when i first got her .. and parents chose her for family, and now i realize she's great and if i had started her earlier she would be great, ive realized that she isnt dopey anymore she 3 now and so excitable and full of energy all the time, she never leaves me alone, she's a weird terrier though her best mate is a guinea pig and whenever she see's a rabbit she want to play with it not kill it or anything, she wouldnt harm a fly lol. patchworkcrew 0
I got the runt of the litter. Grew up to be a fantastic dog but daft as a brush - until he was working that is - then he was absolutely focussed. Rock steady and reliable. Bob G Quote Link to post

DONT BITE MY HEAD OFF AGAIN IF I SAID SOMETHING TO OFFEND YOU best thing you can do is spend as much time with the pup as possible and get a strong bond with the pup.....being negetive will not help......just because it seems more laid back then the others dont mean jack shit .....if i was you i would take ti everywhere with me when its possible .....you never know you could have a real good dog in your kennels ......but being negative from the start will only give your pup a bad start......paitence and plenty of time spent you will see progress ..... mooshka 22
Yep.. Willow was so dopey and still is... In the house.. and road walking..never barks or get excited.... but get her in a field after dark or behind a lure and she fires up !!! So, don't waste your time worrying, just enjoy him Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
I once bred a litter and a dog pup that was a real retard was still here at 15 weeks: always sat at the back, seemed scared of his own shadow: I sold him to a good dog man who to this day still says its the best lurcher he has ever had: took everything. The slow starters are often the best: the teachers told my parents that my sister was a 'bit slow' mentally: at the age of 8: she took a long time learning to read, but she was the one that went on to do A levels, university etc etc: just goes to show that the early fliers aren't always the ones with the grit to stay the course: and this applies both to dogs as well as humans! robgriff1 4
Early days mate, they all mature at different rates. Bought a lurcher pup a year ago, best looking pup was all over me in the pen, a real outgoing type & I didn't choose him. the breeder looked at me in amazement but I wasn't after a showdog. I picked a darker pup, very quiet & laid back but not timid. A year on & I think I made the right choice. he's still laid back but like my shadow, by my side wherever I go. He's been real slow to mature but seeing him tear off after a couple of rabbits & a charlie this past week makes me certain he's going to be a nice dog. Give him time, you'll probably be well happy with the way he turns out. Quote Link to post
