Mattventon 1
I've recently been looking into buying myself a squirrel multi-catch trap, however I am unsure to how good they are. Just thought I'd ask to see if anyone has had success using them and if they were a good trap. Also how many will they catch at a time maximium? thanks Matt Quote Link to post

Have found fenn traps in tunnels with a sprinkling of grain in far far more effective. Quote Link to post
Mattventon 1
thanks for the reply, I thought that my happen with the squirrels not pushing up the door. If anyone else has had experience with the multi catch traps I'd be interested to know how they got on , thanks Quote Link to post
carbarten77 0
Try putting out a baited hopper but add a small swing door like the ones on the multi, this gets them used to pushing the door up to get food. Replace the hopper with the trap they should now go in with more confidence. I've caught 4 in a trap at once with this method but single catch traps were generally better catchers! Hope this helps Quote Link to post
john b 38
I have to admit that I'm not convinced about the theory of multi-catch traps for squirrels, although I know that do work to a degree as Carbarten has said above. Most multicatch traps that work well are designed for things that feed together in groups; pigeons, crows, rats, mice, even rabbits. Part of the benefit of these traps is that the ones you've caught help to draw in the ones you haven't. I know that different squirrels will feed from the same places, but how often do you see multiple squirrels feeding at the same time ? Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
Jack Legg invented the multi catch squirrel trap in the 1960's to deal with high populations of grey squirrels in forestry areas. Since then the design has altered slightly but its use has altered more. Food for the squirrels is generally more freely available in suburbia, and the prebaited maize cages are not quite so effective. OTC Quote Link to post
patchworkcrew 0
I don't know about the multi catch traps but on our estate we have a "no poison" policy (rightly or wrongly) for squirrel traps and we find crunchy peanut butter works a treat. Bob G Quote Link to post
Bobba_fett 117
we'v had one working since january and we'v had a squirrel in it every other day, the most we'v had in at one time was 3. I'v found that they work best when hand feeding a bit of ground, put a really thick bit of wheat in the trap and as the birds eat everything round about all the squirrels have left is the wheat in the trap.it has worked well, more so now that we'v stoped feeding the birds. i'v also found that they try to dig under the trap and will sometimes get some wheat that way. i'v found putting rocks round helps, but even just leaving it they get tired or fedup with scraching under it and go in. another thing even if you think u'v had all the squirrel out of a bit of ground, leave it for a few more days. A bit of ground i had only seen two at the same time going about had 8 squirrels working it. hope this helps, i would recommend this trap it has worked well for me. Mattventon 1
Thanks for the replys, i've decided i going to get myself one now. Recently me & my grandad have been trapping squirrels over the shoot with mk4 Fenns, however theres so many of the critters we're not making much of a dent in the population so hopefully a multi catch will get a few more. Also if i have success, i might have a go at making some up, has anyone else done this? Quote Link to post
gossy 3
alright mate ive got 4 and find them very successful!!!! i have used them under beach trees and near pheasant hoppers. using wheat as bait. rake the area clear and place the trap down then pour wheat in through the mesh at the top covering the floor of the trap. then put a small amount around the mouth of the trap. my best result so far is three in the trap and 1 stuck between the two trap doors so 4. atb gossy Quote Link to post
