Beretta field 12 g or Beretta sporter 12 g

Recommended Posts

I am about to purchase either a Beretta 12g field or a Beretta 12g sporter.

The field weighs 6.8 lbs and the sporter weighs 7.6 lbs

The field has 28" barrels and the sporter has 30" barrels.

The field has a mobil choke (flush fitting) and the sporter has an optima choke (flush fitting).

I mainly want it for shooting pigeon, pheasant, rabbit and duck but would also like to take up (probably to a lessor extent) clay target shooting in the future.

I am not in a position to try before I buy as they are new and I dont know anyone who has either of these guns.

Which ever gun I purchased I would get it fitted by a gunsmith.

Which shot gun would you pick?

Go for the field version if it were me purely due to the weight!

30 inch sporter is more of a 'clay gun' and you did say you were shooting mostly game.

If you doing a lot of walking you will notice the extra weight of the sproter and the extra 2" will be a pain in tight hide situations.

But in the end its down to personal preference

Enjoy both are very nice guns

Thanks masmiffy

I first thought of the field for the lighter weight and smaller barrel length but then thought the added weight of the sporter would help on recoil if I got into clay target in the future - but thanks for your input.

id go the sporting mate, less recoil and im not sure if the feild is but im guessing and thats guessing that the sporting would have a steel proofed barell, and here, australia wich i see your from, you need to use steel shot insted of led for ducks, it prfroms very shit but laws are laws..

NP mate as I said its personal pref!

Me I have a 12g 28" field O/U so biased I guess?

I have used a mates 30" sporter and to be honest the 'extra' makes no difference to the recol in my eyes.

If I were just going to use a gun for walking up game, pigeon shooting odd driven days I would go for a 20g.

Just real sweet to carry all day!

I managed to get over to the Beretta showroom in Melbourne yesterday and after viewing the 28" and the 30" in both field and sporter I settled for the Silver Pigeon 3 Limited Edition Sporter with 30" barrels. I found this gun the best balanced for me and the finish is worth the extra money when compared with the standard Silver Pigeon 3 guns (they are very nice as well though). I had 18mm taken off the stock for a very nice fit - I am sure I will be very happy with this gun and I can't wait for it to arrive!

The answer to your original question is 100% the field, gun...you have bought the wrong one if the details in your first post are accurate, in addition it also sounds like 30" barrels are too long for you if you are taking 18mm off the stock...how tall are you??? AND, the extra weight...which may not sound much....takes it's toll at the end of a long day!!

Any shotgun can be used for any purpose and I hope you enjoy it and it works...but the wrong choice!!!

Thanks Decker I am sure I will enjoy it - I am now certain that I will be using the gun for clay target shooting so hopefully it will prove to be the best choice. I have spotted a very nice Beretta 20 gauge field gun in 28" barrels and although I am not in a position to purchase it at the moment it is on the wish list - but then I guess the decision will be whether to go for the 20 gauge or the 12 gauge field in 28" barrels - this would be for dedicated walk up work in the field.

The person at Beretta who fitted me for the sporter has heaps of experience and the fit of the gun feels very smooth - I am 5" 7" tall.

I was basing my response on your comment.......

If it is to be primarily a clay gun then you may well be on a winner, I still wonder about 30" barrels if you are 5' 7"....you can only generalise about these things and I'm sure 30 will be fine...but my suggestion would have been 28", simply based on your size!!

You could well be right Decker - the problem out here is that the range of guns is not as extensive as in the UK - if the Silver Pigeon 3 Limited edition had been available in 28" for me to try I might well have chosen that. However, after trying out the Silver Pigeon 3 Field in 28" and 30", the Silver Pigeon 3 Sporter in 28" and 30" and the Silver Pigeon Limited Edition in 30", the later proved to feel the best - hence my decision to buy that one. It looked to me as though the side plates and trigger of the Limited Edition are stainless steel whereas the standard has plated steel - also the Limited edition does not have the Schnabel fore-end and is of a better grade wood. This possibly explains why the limited edition felt better balanced. Also, all the sporters have optima-bore barrels, whereas the fields do not.
