harrycatcat 31
Just had a letter today from the environmental health dept about my cockerel. Miserable neighbours have made a complaint does anyone work in environmental health to advise me what I should do as I don't really want to get rid of him. Alternatively has anyone got a good recipe for cockerel curry.
skycat 6,173
I live in the middle of a village, and a miserable git of a neighbour complained about my cockerels: when the environmental health bloke came out he said as long as the birds didn't crow at unsociable hours there was no problem. What I had to do was catch up the cockerels at night after they'd gone to roost, put them in a cage in my big shed, cover the cage with a thick towel to cut out the light, then let them out each morning: 8am weekdays and 9am weekends. You have to make sure the cage is big enough so the birds don't overheat in a shed in summer covered up with towel or blanket. I did it for years: you just sort of get into the habit LOL If you go to work too early to let them out at those hours then I guess your'e going to be eating cockerel! LOL
harrycatcat 31
Thanks for that skycat I would have thought they cant just say that it cant crow at all. Did your man say that it was ok for them to be out and crow during the day? I wonder if there is any case law on it. edited to say how big was the cage? did he have a perch it it ? cos to have perch and fit the bird in its gona be a big cage. desertdog 149
keep their heads low, and they cant stretch to crow, just eaten mine, and the other one is in the pheasant pen till i get the taste for him.
Neal 1,873
That's a coincidence; I was talking about this very subject to my Nan yesterday. She kept a cock and hen wyandotte bantams in an urban area and they overcame the problem in the same way that DesertDog recommends ie to reduce the height of their housing so that he can't stretch to crow. Having said that, my Mother in Law lives in Southsea in Portsmouth and somebody in a road close to her has a cockerel which crows off and on during the day. It's just one of those things; some people love the sound while others...are sad b*****ds with nothing better to do than moan and whings and...
desertdog 149
my old mate had a nasty letter through his door, which i reckon is worse than having the council round, never did find out who sent it, they ate him (the bird) and the conversation came up,his mrs said without thinking, "you cant beat a free range cock", well when she said that i nearly choked on my tea, classic. DIDO.1 22,844
My birds sleeping compartment is covered in felt and lets no light in when birds are shut in at night. I let em out at 7.30, thats plenty late enough! Edited April 20, 2009 by DIDO.
Ratman2 2
There's only one place for a cockerel, and that's on a plate with some roast potatos and gravy. They have no use in producing eggs so why keep the bloody things. Why should your neigbours have to put up with the bloody noise they make. My wife keeps chickens and she used to run a cock with them, till I shot the b a s t a r d. A cockerel is like a barking dog, a bloody pain in the rrrrrrrrrrrr's

I wonder if there is any case law on it. edited to say how big was the cage? did he have a perch it it ? cos to have perch and fit the bird in its gona be a big cage. I fitted the perch (a bit of branch) almost on the floor of the cage and his comb brushed the top of the cage when he was perching: he still crowed though, but not a lot, and yes, they can even crow perching and NOT standing up! Seen it with my own eyes. As for crowing in the garden during the day: we have gardens almost like allotments: its an old part of the village and there's lots of trees, wild birds which make a racket all day, pigeons, collared doves etc: crowing might pose a problem if you were in a more modern housing estate where it was pretty quiet: best thing to do is ask your local environmental health person to come and see what they think: once you have their approval the neighbours can take a running jump LOL

desertdog 149
thats how it is though, you get someone move into an area they think is quiet and want to keep it that way and there be some strange things happen, cockerels crowing, dogs barking, churchbells chiming, i lived at the e,essex kennels and we had a housing estate behind us, hounds like to sing, thats what they do, just like a cock bird will crow, and at 4.am inthe morning they strike up, i dont think we ever had anyone complain about that, some people are narrow minded and fickle, we have a bloke next door who is every weekend doing something to the house and its annoying, but i dont run to the council about that and he dont complain about my dogs,my answer to those that complain about us in the countryside or on the edge of is, FEKKING MOVE, i dont go into the town and moan about their noise. find out who it is and tell them that.
