I was out this morning looking for the early sitty tree pigeons. it was great i saw three pigeons and a maggie Take aim the head is perfectly in the cross hairs no branches to be seen sqeeze and the bird flys off unharmed and why because the blooming branches stretching the 25yrds to the bird are getting in the way. After the second miss i decide to check my zero and it is fine! How on earth do you avoid hitting the branches and leaves that block the way? Moving is not normally an option in case of being spotted.

If you zero your scope at a level target its got maximum gravity acting on it,when you shoot at an angle upwards say 45 degrees the effect of gravity is lessened, therfore your point of impact will be higher and the pellet follows a different trajectory, branches which might seem clear of your shot could be hit.

If you are mainly shooting upwards its as well to zero for the purpose or aim a little lower than your intended impact point after testing the point of impact at an angle,

depending on your rifle/calibre it can make quite a difference. atb steve.

ps shooting downwards with a rifle when its been zeroed on the level your point of impact is also higher.

line up your cross hairs on your target then have a look along the side of the barrel to see if any twigs ect are in the way!

as digger says the arc of the pellet is more pronounced when shooting upwards so you need to think about that too but with plenty of practice shots can be threaded through fairly thick cover!

you may at times even be aiming at a twig to send your pellet over/under it and into the target!

find a bare oak tree with some oak apples in it and get plinking!

i do a lot of sitty tree shooting and also find best way is to line up shot and then look along barrel to see if twigs are in way is then i just leave the pigeons be and normally some more come along quickly to present a good shot, i have had over ten pigeons sitting above me before i have took a shot. think this is very chalenging shooting ta say the least , good luck

I will try waithing for more but i find that once a shot is taken the rest fly off this is annoying having 10 birds with possible shots and only taking one. I use a springer and once one bird is dropped the rest fly is this different with a silenced pcp?

nope no different!

when your pellet strikes flesh it makes quite a pop or THWACK, even more so if its a head shot (there is no mistaking the sound of a good head shot), plus all the noise and movement of a falling bird hitting branches ect on the way down!

all more than enough to scare the rest of them away never mind a muzzle report and the whizz of a pellet travelling through the air!

if you were to stand down range of some one shooting a springer (and i dont recomend you do), you hear very little noise from the action or muzzle, just a ssssssssssttt of the pellet travelling past!

most of the noise from the action and muzzel of any air gun travels sideways not forwards, so although you do hear the action noise ect you tend to hear it at the same time as the pellet arrives and its much much quieter than the person pulling the trigger hears it!

yes i have the same they normally fly off after a shot but on a lot of occasions going for a head shot if i miss i have still had all the pigeons still sit there for a second shot , so it,s either hit or miss on a lot of occasions . i finding it,s getting a bit too late now for sitty tree shooting, lots a leaves are now covering everything, time now for the rabbits

FAC Air rifle perhaps?

Would have a bit more power anyway

That's almost certainly the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. More power is in no way going to help.

Ron not trying to be contraversial here but "more power" will help to an extent, pellets travelling faster have a tighter trajectory and are less likely to hit branches,im not a power merchant myself but it is true.

.22 at 12ftlb has a fairly wide trajectory,.177 at 12ftlb has a much tighter trajectory, why because its smaller/lighter and travelling faster so less affected by gravity=more accurate. Looking down a barrel seems less important to me,tight shots at high targets and looking down a barrel to determine if you will hit a branch 30+ feet up is impossible imo.

The average drop on a .17 HMR at 200m is 4" an average .22 LR has a drop of 9" over double, difference =weight/speed of bullet.atb steve.
