Guest jdh488
Hi all, just wondering if anyone changes over to dry food over the summer or just chop up a rabbit. I have been feeding fresh rabbit but now the warmer weather is here the rabbit starts to stink after a few hours and the flys are on the increase. The ferrets are cleaned out every other day and are handled every day. My white Gil is in kit at the moment due to drop in three weeks, i wondered if it would be worth swopping onto dried food slowly now, rather than running the risk of increasing the fly population arond the youngsters when they are born. Cheers. Quote Link to post
Guest MOLLY
I only feed dry when ive forgotten to defrost the raw. Try putting the raw meat in last thing at night when it is cooler and there are not so many flies about, i always remove anything not eaten after 24hrs or sooner if required. You will have flies regardless if you feed raw or not because of the furt poo. The flies and maggots dont seem to bother the furts in the slightest, but are not nice especially if their run is near the house. Having said that, if any meat has small maggots i pick them off for the goldfish, he loves them MOLL. Quote Link to post

Guest jdh488
When the Gil kits how long will it be before the kits start at the rabbit meat, should i put some dried food in as well as the raw meat as a suppliment. cheers Quote Link to post
Guest wickidweasel
like MOLLY said feed them last thing at night and take out uneaten food in the morning you can always leave a bit of dry in case they get peckish in the day. Ive always introduced kits to dry from 5 - 6 weeks old. I personally wouldnt feed too much dry i think the stuffs shit and only use it when im out of raw or just to make a change the only benefit ive ever seen from the stuff is cleaner teeth, my ferts always get crap coats when they have too much of it Quote Link to post

Guest fuzzylampkin
do as Molly does and you wont go wrong mate but if your going to feed dry food make sure they have plenty of water because they drink gallons of it! Quote Link to post
Guest MOLLY
if your going to feed dry food make sure they have plenty of water because they drink gallons of it! In the summer aswell as their bottles i keep a seed tray (the kind without holes ) full of water with a couple of heavy rocks in....to stop them tipping it over so they can play hide & seek underneath it. Another tip Socks posted last year is to keep an bottle of milk full of water in the freezer, they can lie around it if they get too hot. MOLL. Quote Link to post
Guest RobW71
I feed fresh as normal, the housings are pretty fly proof, some'll always find a way in. Mine enjoy some of this Regards Rob Quote Link to post
Guest MOLLY
I forgot to say, the seed tray is no-where the kits can get to for fear of them drowning. MOLL. Quote Link to post
