arveyboy 0
ok so ive sent off a variation to add a .243 for fox and deer to my certificate. my FEO had an interview with me and said the only issue his boss might have is that as ive not held my rimfire for very long she may insist on me having another centrefire holder accompany me (just for the deer stalking) although he said he would argue my case to say i wouldnt need mentoring. so i just got back from Italy and i have a phone call saying the boss has insisted on me having a mentor until they say that i am fully qualified to be stalking deer. whats odd is that they did not impress on me doing my dsc1 qualification. so lamping foxes im fine to be on my own but out stalking i need my mentor. the way i see it i'd rather do as much as possible to ensure i dont need a mentor. the mentor would be our keeper and i enjoy shooting with him but it ties me up to when he is available which i would rather not do. i see that i have a couple of choices: 1)accept the mentoring and after a month or two get the keeper to call saying im qualified and remove the condition. this would be good as i would be able to gain more knowledge although i wouldnt be shooting on my timetable (not preferable) 2)ring up and ask them to remove the deer condition and just leave it as fox and vermin. this seems more favourable as it would mean i can still shoot with the keeper but not be tied down to when he is available to shoot. also, technically as i will only be stalking muntjac for the forseeable future i think im right in saying that newisssh legislation means that having a fox condition means that i can automatically shoot muntjac and cwd. please correct me if im wrong. 3)cancel my variation (definitely dont want that happening). it seems to me like quite an odd condition but i'd appreciate any views on the matter before i ring the FEO on monday cheers, Jack Quote Link to post
riohog 5,721
no you must have the deer condition to shoot munti and cwd they still come under the deer act altho it was revised to use .222and 223 for munti and cwd in england Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Leave it on there with mentoring, that way you can at least get started! Quote Link to post
Fidgety 8
Leave it on there with mentoring, that way you can at least get started! I'd agree with the above. It's actually a short spell of someone mentoring you. Count your blessings you can get a mentor without them charging you!! It's no REAL inconvenience. Very lucky you are not urged to do DSC1 as well!! In my humble opinion, anyone who wants to shoot deer should do it - it's very interesting and should weed out those who just want blow stuff away. The one 8,494
leave it on is there not anybody else who could be more flexible to mentor you ? Quote Link to post
bignoel 14
i have done 6 mths with a mentor on a 222 fox and now asked for a 243 which i got for fox/deer my mentor argued with fao that i have done the safe shot bit and why have i got to carry on with a mentor as i have only changed calibre and taken 4 deer with his rifle before i got my own . 10 mths with a mentor i have 1 mth left before fao will lift it even thou my mentor asked for it to be lifted ? but worth the wait Quote Link to post
arveyboy 0
unfortunately there is nobody else who lives locally that shoots centrefire. my old man is also loathe to have the keeper mentoring me as it ties him to me. he said he wouldnt mind doing it at all but my dad would rather not have him mentoring me simply because he doesnt think its fair on him to have to accompany me. i think what ive decided ill do is leave the deer condition off my certificate for now and after 6 months i'll ask to have it put back on due to more experience with a centrefire. the FEO said that wouldnt be a problem but if his boss is still not convinced i could always do a DSC1. also while i have a post going, i was looking at a zeiss conquest 6.5-20x50 to put on the rifle as Jamie G got his for 400 but im looking at about 650 which is slightly out of my budget now so anything in the 400 squid mark? nikon monarch? bushnell elite? jack Quote Link to post
cbw 4
As with Jamie G I have the Zeiss. I was lucky, ebay purchase with a paypal 10% off voucher, supplied from the USA and it was when the pound was good against the dollar......Slightly less than £400 delivered. It is worth shopping around as it really is a good scope, if you go the ebay route make sure it gets sent as a 'gift' helps with the chances of not paying VAT! CBW Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
just put up with it for now mate. it will soon come off. i had mentoring on my 22/250 for fox and vermin ! had it for around 8 months as i couldnt be bothered to send it off as there was a back log. anyway it picked up and i sent it off and now i have hmr and 22/250 open for vermin and fox. i got my mates to write a letter in for me to send. and explain about my shooting and they where fine with it i also spoke to flo in the local gunshop the other day and he said i could add cwd and munjac to my fac now for the 22/250 even tho we dont get the cwd around here. my cousin just got permission on 400 acres which we have to go and see soon. its a massive golf course that hasnt been shot for years. so im told it has lots of rabbits, fox on there and a rake of munjac and roe deer. so i mite be pushing for 23 to if there is the roe on there to jusify getting a 243. hang in there mate your condition will soon be lifted. FOXHUNTER 5,021
I would leave the deer condition on and go with a mentor , at least youve made a start , why delay things ? Quote Link to post
AzMaN 0
would the mentoring be for the rifle, or for the shooting of deer? if its just for deer surely theres no harm in haveing it on the cert, even if your mentor isnt always avaliable, string it out over a year or so going when you can. if you leave it off now, then apply in 6 months whats to stop them saying again that you need a mentor for deer? beaner 0
Have you checked that you can have a 243 for fox only, i asked my FEO down here if i could have a 243 for fox only and the will not allow it. They stated i have to have permission and land to shoot deer on as 243 is over calibre for fox only. I just cant get my head around the different counties and interpitation of the guidlines, i have a 22rf and i have fox stated on my licence but some counties will not allow that. When will everyone come in line and all sing from the same hymn sheet. Quote Link to post
arveyboy 0
rightyho, im going to call the FEO tomorrow and organize the whole thing. from the message i was left i only need mentoring for the stalking. being stupid i interpreted it so that if i had a mentor i would only be allowed out with him accompanying me. because i only need him when im stalking it means im free to shoot whenever i can and only need him to accompany me stalking so i think i shall take the offer as it stands. to be honest as i have little or no experience deer stalking it will be good to have him with me when going on stalks. that leaves me free for target work and lamping so i think im relatively happy to accept the offer. ive also managed to save up about 1500 quid so that should get me a tidy package Quote Link to post
