Reading Scope Correctly

I have just purchased quite a nice scope and have fitted it to my AA S400

 

The recticle is :

 

 

I might sound like a n00b here, but how do i correctly use this type of range finder.

 

Is it just a pretty pattern and works the same as other with simple bars ?

It will depend on the gaps between the lines. Problem is that with mils etc, they only really work at longer distances, but it should be possible to use them roughly at shorter range as well.

 

Not sure if you will get the accuracy of ranging you want though.
