Out with the Parker Hale!!!

Recommended Posts

I was talking to Mr Logic on his thread " Shall I turn my 204 into a 22-250? " , and then it got onto talk about 243 / 308!!

I did not want to take over the thread with chat about the Parker Hale 7.62s!! , so i have opened a new thread ;)

I mentioned that the Parker Hale target models ( TX1200 / M84 / M83 ) are very good shooters for the money!!! :D 4 months ago i purchased a Parker Hale TX1200 in 7.62!! for £200 :D , my other friends own another 2 TX1200s / a M84 and a M83!!

They are all true sub half inch @100yds rifles with the same specified load...

I said that i would keep you updated on how i get on with the rifle..........

So i went out this evening and parked up for some longrange bunny control........

first up was a bunnie at 316yds and then another at 314yds..........

I missed a couple at 560yds+ but only by a click!!!

The farmers son then came across for a chat , and as we was talking a bunnie came out at 392yds!!

So i dialed in the corrections for elevation and wind then fired the shot , you heard the " pop " and the youngsters face was a picture!!! :D

So much to say he wants to go out with me again!!! :D

heres some photos of the trip................

Hope you don not mind me sharing this with you , just want to let you know that these rifles may look old hat - but they sure shoot sweet!!!!

All the best..................

Ammo?????

All home loaded mate ,

Cases are fully prepped ( no neck turn )

Load is..........

44 grains of Varget

CCI Benchrest primers

155 A-max bullet.............

How did you get EXBAL on your phone?

Just picked up a new phone with Windows on it , so i just downloaded PC Exbal on it!!!

Bloody expensive rabbit! Damn good shot though.......................

Can I ask (out of curiosity) why you'd want to be taking rabbits out at those ranges though? Or is it just the challenge of making the shot?

Thanks ,

The answer to you question is , yes i do like the challenge because it proves that all the time that is spent working up accurate reloads and testing them on paper at different ranges , in different wind / conditions can be used for accurate shooting at the longer ranges!!

I use a rangefinder and windmeter and when bunnies / crows and magpies are out past 300yds it sure tests yourself and equipment!!!

Its all about learning ( on inanimate targets ) of what yourself and your rifle / load can and cannot do at extended range!! , it also teaches you of when and when not to take that shot on at the longer ranges!!!

As a example , i went out Saturday afternoon for some bunnie hunting with my 6PPC - this rifle will put all 5 rounds ( if i do my bit ) down the same hole!!!

Started with a bunnie at 385yds , so dialed in drop and windage and the bunnie flopped over!!

Had a couple of others at 192 and 231yds..............

Another bunnie came out at 343yds and knocked that one over!!!

On another farm ( which has a pheasant syndicate ) i shot a dog Fox at 333yds...............

Its all about knowing your rifle inside out and knowing how much that bullet drops and drifts in differing conditions , and most of all , of knowing when and when not to take the shot!!!

Sorry about the long winded reply , and thanks for your replies......

All the best.................

No apology needed mate! Cheers for that! I've shot the Nato 7.62 at extended ranges, but can't imagine the old SLR being anywhere near as accurate as that..............not really designed for it, after all.

I don't homeload any of my own rounds. I have a .22lr & .17hmr............I don't find I use the .17 enough to benefit from reloading, but after reading your post I might reconsider that thought though! Be interesting to see the difference between a factory round for it & a few carefully-thought out homeloads!

Got a bit of research to do, it looks like!!!!

Unfortunately, they are both Factory loads only pal, the cases can only be used once as the primer cannot be removed and replace, shame really ;)

Yep. I was really talking about replacing the hmr with a Mod7 or similar, but it didn't take me long to realise I'd be out of my depth. Don't know enough about it to justify spending heaps on a new rifle :hmm:

Apologies for the cock-up :icon_redface:

Good shooting & nice rifle but i wouldent like to carry that rifle as the pipe (barrel) is like a scafold pole. I know you need them kinda barrels with target/range work.

Thanks for the reply v-max!!!

The rifle is not as heavy as it looks!! , like i have mentioned , its a barrel should over a medium weight tube and this is made of alloy!!!

I hunt with these weight rifles too because of the dependable accuracy!!

This is just a personal view but ever since i was a young hunter , hunting with quite heavy German made rifles , i have found when shouldering a rifle with a heavier weight i seem to be more steadier - feels more planted!!

All the best...............
