thinking of breeding a 10 year old 1st cross wheaten bitch , just wondering do age matter, it would be her 1st litter.

at that age mate i think its pushing it a bit, and beeing her 1st litter. i wouldnt want to put that much stress on a bitch of that age imo

normally 6-7 years if the bitch is fit .you may end up with a few probs more info off other peeps more knowledgeable than me will no doubt give you more advice however my friend had a lovely deerhound cross 1o years ago and an accidental mating meant she had pups she was 11 but the bitch in question was also in very good condition and produced 3 pups.

ive bred a bitch at that age before. i would only put the dog over her once, if she's fit and steady i don't see why not if you only want to get a pup for for yourself mate go for it. she might have less pups though and just keep an eye on her alb al

will probaly go for it , she will be ready in 6 days , shes fit & the dog is a kennel mate of hers for 6yrs so wont be much stress ? thanks for the advice lads but if i hear anything that puts me off or shes not keen to be crossed will call a halt .

a buddy of mine bred a bitch in 94 at twelve years old and she had four pups and believe me all four pups were unreal on the lamp

If she's fit n well by all means go for it.. I find when u breed an older bitch the pups are not as wild, mischievous n turn out all round better dogs.. An old guy once told me that when u breed an old bitch she passes more of her instincts on to the pups than a younger or inexperience bitch would..

Sayin that ive never bred a bitch thats 10 yrs old but i do know a lad that bred a lurcher bitch when she was almost 8 n it was her 1st litter, he got her checked over by a vet 1st n everythin went fine, she had 6 healthy pups..

Get her checked over by a vet 1st, better safe than sorry, but if she's fit i see no problems..

Far too late for a maiden bitch of any breed to be put through a pregnacy at ten years old

Domestic dogs, bitches, are very different to wild canines: they don't go through a menopause, so even if their bodies are too old to successfully hold/have a litter they still come into season: domestic dogs are a man made creature after all.

 

Problems you could have breeding from a bitch of her age for the first time are: uterine inertia (failure of the uterus to contract properly during birth) which then means a caesarian. Are you experienced enough to know when the bitch is in trouble? She may not go into labour at all which then means the pups would start dying inside her before you know anything about it, which could kill her too.

 

I've bred a Saluki type bitch at 9 years old, but it was her second litter and she was an easy whelper and she was very fit and lightly built.

 

Other things to consider are that even if she does start labour OK, her ligaments and joints are old: strain on her legs carrying a possibly big litter, failure of the cervix to open properly which means a long and very difficult birth which could stress and traumatise the bitch.

Failure to produce milk: means a hand reared litter: bad news for you and the pups unless you know what your'e doing!

 

You need to ask yourself the following questions before going ahead.....

 

Are you prepared for any or one of the above problems?

Is it worth the risk?

Do you have a good vet that you can call on at any time if things start to go wrong?

Do you have enough money to pay that vet if expensive caesarian/treatment etc are needed?

 

And lastly: it's great to produce pups from a good bitch, but think of her welfare too: would it be fair on her, even if things to go right? Having and rearing a litter is hard work at the best of times!

The old guy doesnt know much about genetics does he. I could imagine an experienced bitch whose had a few litters may preoduce steadier pups through training them better from birth, but otherwise there would be no difference.

PERSONALY MATE I WOULD LEAVE HER ALONE AT 10 YEARS OLD I THINK SHE MAY BE PAST HER BEST JUST THINK SHE WILL HAVE THESE PUPS IN THE SUMMER TIME WHERE THE HEAT AND A BELLY FULL OF PUPS WILL KNOCK THE BITCH FOR SIX AND IF SHE,S NEVER HAD A LITTER BEFORE HER BACK END MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO PASS THE PUPS EASLY THEN YOU WILL HAVE A PROBLEM .BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY YOUR DOG YOUR CHOICE
