ferts nails

Recommended Posts

grab the ferret by the skin on the back of its neck, (almost lke you's pick a puppy up) and the ferret will let you do whatever you want to it, dont cut the nail too short because there's a vein running into it. get a good grip , it wont hurt the ferret at all pal.

As above, take them by the scruff, just thumb and pointing finger, they will "yawn" this is a sign of submission.

They wil be very limp, but taketoo long they will get very fidgety and try to scratch,

the correct way to cut ferts nails is along, and not down.

cutting down ways will create a point and will not be nice to walk on, cutting along, " horizontal" will keep the natural flat patterm -

I have a habit of cutting 4mm below the vein that you can see in the nail.

All the best.

Best way put collar on get lead or bit string and take them for a walk on hard surface ,they enjoy a good root around and scratch things like in and around plant pots etc ,and it willl increase the bond ,you will have a good laugh at what they get up too :victory:

Another good method of keeping the nails down in the summer is to place a ceramic inside the ferts cage and place it in a place it always walks. For example i place mine just outside its nesting box as it has to sleep and will have to walk across it many times a day and this will help to keep his nails down a bit.

You won't need to bother scruffing them or need a helper if you pop oil on their belly ;)

If you have some olive oil put a few drops on the ferrets belly , sit it in your lap & while its busy licking the oil off you can trim the nails

I can do all 10 of mine in a trice on my own using this method. Even the wriggly ones just lie back licking themselves
