Have your dogs ever acted odd when they came upon a strange scent?

I ask because tonight I was checking on the duck pen - dogs were barking so i went to make sure my ducks werent being molested!

i took the pup with me.... he's almost a year old, and i'm getting him used to what his job will be.

I had walked him in this area earlier today, and yesterday, and last night. But tonight when we came to the back of the duck pen, he had his nose to the ground like a bloodhound. obviously SOMETHING had been there recently. Then he did a weird little jig.... he kicked his hind legs backwards - like a male dog after its marked its territory - shook himself and snuffed loudly at the ground.

after that he lead me towards the edge of the woods, then came back and he did it again. same exact motions in the same spot.

I thought maybe he was reacting to the bugs flying around. He's a solid white dog, and i had the light shining directly on him. and i noticed a few night time insects had landed on his back... Just to find out for sure i walked him away from that spot, kept the light trained on him.... nothing. bugs flying all over, and he snapped at a couple, but mostly he was interested in smelling around.

I took him back to that area and he kicked his hind legs, pawed the ground, snuffled, then rolled in the area several times. i didnt see anything on the ground, but i suppose some animal might have left a urine trail?

Anyway just wondering if anyone else has seen their dogs do this over a particular scent and what was the animal that caused it?
