Petition to: abolish all local by-laws prohibiting the keeping of hens in gardens.

Recommended Posts

What bylaws are these then? If anyone could post a link to give examples of the bylaws I would be happier to sign. The bylaws might be concerned with chicken health and welfare. Presumably we would want to keep this sort of bylaw?

It states 'local' bylaws so i assume (rightly or wrongly) that each council will/may have different by-laws. You would need to be specific as to which council your interested in.....i suggest you invesigate any particular council that interests you before you sign if you have any concerns.

However it does say on the petition its regarding the prohibition of keeping chickens in your garden.

That's what I thought but I couldn't find any bylaws when I "googled" for any council (not in the UK). Nor on the Environment Agency or DEFRA websites. If anyone has a link, I'd be interested - particularly since we have a dozen or so chickens ourselves.

My council merely say that they dont encourage people to keep poultry at home because most properties are not suitable. This i do not agree with, most properties have gardens and the vast majority would be suitable for keeping a few chickens. Obviously i would condone their thoughts on husbandry but as stated disagree with their claim of suitability or should i say lack of.

The petition does not include the keeping of cockerels.

After trawling through more gobbldygook i see that some councils have covenants within the deeds to properties prohibiting the keeping of any poultry. I would believe that this is what the petition is pointed at.

What would they confiscate your chickens despite them being well kept and healthy, seems to me like its one of those laws that has no current context but would cost money to overturn it so they just dont enforce it.

not saying animal welfare comes into, thats vitally important.
