Pembshunter 23
I was picking up some food the other day for my new dog, And the guy at the till starts asking me what kind of dog I have etc, It turns out he was into hunting and has been keeping lurchers and ferrets for years and lives quite close to me, so as we both where hunting alone, we agreed to get a few days and nights out on each others ground in the coming season, While we where talking he told me to leave the JW ferret food to one side and get them a big a of 28% protein greyhound food and along with the odd rabbit and whatever I shot it would do them fine....Apparently he's been feeding his ferrets on it for the past ten years and by the look of them there as healthy as you could want, great coats, bright eyes and lively! Is this right? I just cant see greyhound feed doing ferrets..... Quote Link to post
Guest ferret feller
my ferrets thrived on cat food dry and the odd pigeon or phessie but i feed mine normal ferret food dry now no problems and there all happy and clean Quote Link to post
joe14 98
I would have thought greyhound food biccies would be too large for the ferrets. Its simple realy, ferrets = ferret food Cat food contains vegetable proteins and can cause bladder stones in ferrets. Quote Link to post
Fat-Ferret 857
I know a lot of people that feed it, Its a fraction of the price of ferret food, and theres only small differences in the protein and fat content %'s which can be easily made up with odd rabbits etc Quote Link to post
silver ferret 0
Dog food for dogs, cat food for cats, ferret food for ferrets! Quote Link to post

I've given mine dog food on a couple of occasions when I've run out or not thawed real food for the ferrets. A little now and again is OK imo especially if supplemented with carcasses. The one 8,511
When im passing the hutches feeding the dogs i sometimes give them a biscuit out the dog bowls some ferrets will take it and eat it others wont . but i feed mine meat all year round .The only thing about greyhound food you dont pay vat so it will be cheaper than ferret food Quote Link to post
noddy6560 0
ferrets need 38 -40 percent protien and 18-20 percent oils/fat in their diet they also require taurine which is not found in dog food, be better with high quality cat food than dog food as cats require taurine in their diet too Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
dry cat food but thats 34%, dog food isnt any good. Quote Link to post
ellir0305 9
dry cat food but thats 34%, dog food isnt any good. at first on here i was told 30% ish is fine for ferrets but the numbers are just going up, mine are currently being fed on go cat dry bistcuits along with some fresh pigeon and seem fine, lively as anything andthey love the biscuits.clambering up the mesh at feeding time at mole valley farmers a big sack of go cat is £19ish for 10kg and vitalin ferrets food is £29 for 15kg so really theres nothing in it but im sure prices will vary. whats taurine?? and why do gferrets need it and how can cat food cause what was it bladder stones?? noddy6560 0
ferrets like cats cannot manufacture their own taurine, it is required by them for overall good health, deficinancy in it causes heart and eye probs and can lead to others causing death. There is research being done on diet and thinking is that feeding biscuits can cause health problems such as insuloma, bladder stones teeth problems, kibble is a plant based mix, cats and ferrets cannot cope with vegtable matter, so even if meat protien is in the kibble the ratio is usually greater towards the vegtable matter, they lack the enzymes to break down fibre Quote Link to post
noddy6560 0
P.S ferrets are good at wanting to scoff things they shouldn't, does mean it is good for them and can cause harm. They love raisians but only takes a few to kill them because they are toxic to ferrets Quote Link to post
