borderboy 80
As some of you may have read i have just bought a .177 BSA Lightning... I'm having a complete ball ache zeroing it, and am trying to find whether its human or machine error..? COuld anyone else who owns or has owned one, tell me whether there was rifling in the barrel? its just that i had a look down mine and it looks smooth which seem odd compared to any other air rifle i've shot...? Guest Scuba1
Well ................yes there should be some sort of grooves in there if not its a dud ATB Michael Quote Link to post
borderboy 80
I think its a Dud then, it was driving me nuts... i couldnt even get a half decent grouping, no matter what i tried... I will drop it in the gunshop in the morning....! Quote Link to post
Sterry 0
Dont take this the wrong way but have you tried looking down the bore at different angles as sometimes you look right down and just see a smooth bore but at a different angle you can see the rifling. maybe its something to do with the scope or mounts i had that with a cheap SMK scoope changed the crosshairs every shot, needless to say i was confused as i was getting good groups ith iron sight but missing the board with the scope....it was a big board too. salukiwhippet 6
It should definitely be rifled! I've got one in .22, and the moderator that came with it was all aluminium, and the hole where the barrel goes into the moddy ended up oval, so I couldn't tighten it down properly. Might be worth trying yours without the moddy before you give money to a gunshop! James Quote Link to post

I've had a good look and I cant see anything at all on the barrel... It does have a £30 jobby scope on the top of it, I'll keep the scope once the rifles sorted, and go from their...! borderboy 80
Had the rifle replaced today, it was the barrel...! the dealer was very good about it, just replaced and gave me a tin of pellets for my troubles...! Quote Link to post

Guest Scuba1
That will bring your group sizes down a bit I should think. Happy hunting Michael Quote Link to post
Freddy Watts 1
Glad its sorted. Would have been like shooting a musket or something, only good if you are shooting at a whole army of bunnies. Hope it groups better now. Had no complaints about my old lightning and my mate loves his. Very good for the money. ATB Freddy Edited April 15, 2009 by Freddy Watts Quote Link to post
borderboy 80
I am getting about an 1 1/2" at 30 ish yds which should improve with time I'm a little out of practice... Quote Link to post
Freddy Watts 1
Springers definately take more practice as you have to let them recoil the same every time. I remember trying to get good groups with my first springer. Takes practice but is very satisfying when you get it right. Freddy Quote Link to post
aaronpigeonplucker 32
well your at it i have a cheapy smk scope 4x40 going for 2 quid if anyone wants it. its very fuzzy and i should jsut chuck it away really. Quote Link to post
borderboy 80
been practicing at a bit of a shorter range, 20ish yds, and i have been hitting those 1" chalk disks quite consistently, with the odd flyer...! but am slowly improving... What is considered as the range limit on a standard .177 lightning...? Quote Link to post
Guest Scuba1
That depends a lot on the shooter. For your gun I would say that 30 to 35 metres is a distance where you would kill a rabbit easy, IF you hit it in the noggin. Having said that, wabbits are not as clever as Einstein and so they have a smaller brain and thats the bit you need to hit. So If you can" kill " a polo mint at that distance with constancy, you are good to go' ATB Michael Quote Link to post
