New rifle advice

I'm looking at buying an air rifle after picking up a few rabbit infested horse paddocks. I'm not looking at spending big bucks just now... I'd ideally like a PCP... I was thinking along the lines of a second hand AA S200 or BSA Ultra... are they good bets for knocking off rabbits at 25-35yds...? also can they be charged off of stirrup pumps...? Are there any other rifles worth looking at..? I would like to spend £500 all inc gun, scopes, charging, bipod...

You could probably pick up a decent S/H pcp with all the charging gear for that mate. I've got a lot of time for the the s200, it's a cracking little gun IMO.

The AA s200 will be a good choice. you can get a 2nd hand one with a scope and a gun bag within your price range.

They do seem a nice gun, had a look at them a few times, and they always seem a good choice... Are there any common faults...? Is it reasonably chargeable with a stirrup pump...?

if you want to be pushing a pump up and down for 1/4 of an hour then its fine to use a stirrup pump. you usually use a stirrup pump for top ups. any good gun shop can give you a fill up from a dive bottle for £3 to £5 pounds.

Don't know about the S200 charging but the ultra is definately easily done with a pump. I believe that timelord said he did one from empty in 5 mins no problem. And I believe scuba said you could top one up in 2 mins. I have a hornet whic is a larger and older version of the ultra and it charges no problem with a pump so ultra should be fine. And as far as i know not many people seem to have problems picking off bunnies with either of the guns at 25-35 yards.

 

You should be able to get both plus the trimmings second hand for your budget.

if you want to be pushing a pump up and down for 1/2 an hour then its fine to use a stirrup pump. you usually use a stirrup pump for top ups. any good gun shop can give you a fill up from a dive bottle for £3 to £5 pounds.

 

I guess you mean to fill up a diving bottle Aaron. You don't want to be paying that much for just filling up your gun. It is personal choice about a pump. If you are not the fittest person then maybe not but if you don't mind a workout and your gun does not have a huge reservoir then pumps are ok for most things just be sure to get a moisture and particle filter for the pump.

I'm happy to spend a few minutes before or after a session topping up the gun, I dont think i'll be needing to top up during a session, as they both have a decent shots per fill quota, and if i empty it its time to stop either way... what sort of scopes should i be looking at, I imagine ill be mostly shooting daytime, dawn and dusk... probably out of the van or a hideof some sort in the paddocks , at the ranges i mentioned earlier...?

if you havent got a lot of money to spend on scopes then i would highly recommend JSR scopes. the scope i have got from them is superb value for money. of coarse if you want a top end scope then go for one of the HWAKE scopes. the JSR scopes will cos you around £30 and HAWKE scopes about £60.

just had to fill my new mk3 s200 and it took about 10 mins not much effort but i can only sing its praises and you could probably pick one up with all the gear off the airgun forum for about 350 with pump and or scope actually i think there is one on there right now

But you pumped it up from empty. From now on you will only have to do the bit from ca. 100 / 110 to 160/180 bar and that is going to take you a lot less.

stirrup pumps are fine, i top mine up after each session as it also helps keep seals in good condition, when i first got the tank was empty but no great hardship just bit of perspiration and perseverance is all thats needed.

all id say is get logun or weirach silencer they are well worth the money.
