DISABLED DOGS

Recommended Posts

Talking to a guy at selby game fair, he had a lurcher with him that had lost its tail in an accident. When i asked him if it had affected its running ability, he said at first it used to run a bit wider on the turn, but it started to anticipate when its quarry would turn and would cut in for the kill. He reckoned it had probably made it a better dog. Now it made me remember a mates dog nearly 30 years ago that smashed its front leg coursing a hare. Anyway part of its leg had to be amputated, and we thought that was the end of its career. Prior to this it was a first class lurcher, whippet grey 24 ats 36lbs running weight. My mate was so pissed off he toyed with the idea of putting it down, i always knew he wouldnt because he thought so much about that dog. So after about 3 months we took it with us and the other dogs on a ferreting trip. And sure enough it managed to take a bolter in great style, after that there was no holding it, believe me its amazing just how fast that dog with 3legs could shift. Funny to watch because every time it caught one it used to do a parachute roll with it in its mouth. Any of you guys seen a similar thing. :o

I had a whippet years ago that was a wreck. He fractured his pelvis and trapped the syatic nerve then fractured a fore leg at 6months. he raced to championship level before having his thigh broken in 17 places in a collision with a spectator at the races. He lived to 18 and I ratted with him for years on 3 legs. One of the best dogs I ever had, so much heart and personality one of those dogs you just enjoyed having around.

all the best Dirtwinger
