Guest AngelicAcid
Has anyone worn the fell boots, if so which ones, been looking at the Breamaster and the glenmore by hoggs. Any cobblers still make these, with the vibram soles though.

Bosun11 537
I've worn/used Fell Boot's and.... er, they are an 'aquired taste', so to speak. If your looking at a getting pair, they would take a bit of getting used to but if your in 'em a few times a week the'd be fine, fell huntsmen practically live in 'em. I think it'd be unlikely that any old cobbler still makes them now, you'd have to buy the factory ones. Years ago I was recommended a cobbler by a bloke whilst up in the Lakes Fell Hunting. I found the old shop, down a tiny side road in Ambelside, as I needed a new 'hook eyelett' fitted to my then crappy walking boots, after i'd torn one out whilst out with the Eskdale Ennerdale. The shop was like stepping back in time, really antiquated, so was the Cobbler in there! Skeleton thin, with huge thick glasses draped down his nose, i was explaining about my boot and looking round as I did so, only to find ancient photos of Fell Huntsmen and supporters on the walls. Names such as Johnny Richardson, Anthony Chapman and Joe Bowman, to name but a few. Also on the walls were Fell Boot pictures. He must of seen my eyes lite-up and I explained how I'd tore out the eyelett and asked him about Fell Boots. He said that he had made them for most Huntsmen in the Lakes over the years and produced about five old dusty pocket books with scale drawings of what parts make up a Fell boot and how to make 'em, they were full of detail and then a book of names and sizes and told me that his boots would and have, given a lifetimes Fell hunting. I remember him looking with me around the walls and saying, "they lived in 'em". The books were old, very old, he showed me the oldest, handed down to him by the bloke who he served his apprenticeship with. I asked if he could make me a pair of boots but sadly he shook his head and told me he hadn't made a pair in over 20 years as his hands were not up to working the leathers that would be needed to make a 'lifetime' pair of boots, he held his hands up and they were full of authritus (spelling), he was 92 years old!! I returned to the shop, as asked, two hours later to collect my repaired boot and mindful of an irritated ex girlfriend, who had made the trip with me (and was really bored when i left her to followed the hounds!!) I thanked and paid him and left the shop. I went back about two years later but the Cobblers had gone and the shop.... some none descript tourist type crap. It's sommat i'll never forget, the old shop and it's old Cobbler, the pictures and most of all the books and i'd like to think that somewhere, someone, still has them. herdwick 52
I have a pair of Hoggs fell boots. Shepherd boots I think they're called. They were the next grade up, with leather lining. Had them 10 or 12 years, brilliant boots. Properly looked after last for years and years. Bloody comfortable too, but the breaking in can be a bit of a b*****d!!
