just tried...

Recommended Posts

i just tried my BSA lightning xl without its scope (bearing in mind its got a scope rail, no open sights and the barrle is fully sleeved in a sound moderator) and could see how this could be useful for feral and rat shooting in close conditions (under 10 yards) i could hit a tin can really quickly and 4/5 times i hit it. am quite surprised.

Just keep in mind, that the head of a rat is a bit smaller then a tin can..................... unless the rats around where you live are on the LARGE side

Aaron, I know you're not very old, but please think about what you're typing.

The aim of shooting any airgun quarry is not to immobilise them. It's to kill them. One shot, one kill. Of course this doesnt happen all the time, but it should never be deliberate.

Using your Lightning to shoot any quarry without a sight of some description is a bad idea.

i shoot rats pigeons and the odd rabbit with open sights on my SMK aslong as you get enough practice its easy its also more fun

The thing is with a BSA lightning it has no open sights of any kind which will make thinks ALOT harder

Look aaron I am not trying to rain on your parade but do yourself a favour and either leave the sights on there or get a laser and adjust it to the distance you want to shoot, as just immobilising them is not the way to go, even though they are " only " rats, they have to have your respect as a living animal and deserve to be killed as humanely as possible. Just my two pence worth.

Its not an easy thing to do with no sights of any form or shape on the gun I would think.

True enough, but the whole point is to be able to put your shot there as accurately as you can. Pot-shots is not the way to go.

I should make no differance if your shooting rats or anthing else. If you can't be as sure as you can, don't shoot!

Hiho you talk down to Aaron at every opportunity you get and I'm not saying you can't shoot, but your not a trained marksman unlike myself and I'm sure other soldiers like myself on this forum :hmm: Just give the kid a break will you please.

Aaron just put your scope back on because as Scuba1 has pointed out it's better to kill rather than mame ;)

Can you clarify Aaron mate?

When you say without it's scope. has it got open (iron) sights on it??

If so, they would be ideal for ratting, as long as you take the time to familiarise yourself with them.

Everyone should start off shooting with open sights, IMO.

That was my point, the gun has now no sights of any kind. I just don't want the kid to get himself into trouble and point him in the right direction.

I didn't see the part where he said he had no open sights TBH! :icon_redface:

True mate. ;)

You should never shoot at living quarry without a sights of some sort, I just hope the lad listens to the advice given here. Most of it is good, apart from the piss taking off a certain few members.
