arveyboy 0
well if your mostly shooting reds then i'd be inclined to say that if you are a beginner stalker then go for a higher calibre for your stalking. maybe a 6.5x55 would be more suitable or go for the .308. .243 is obviously more than capable if you're confident that you're an excellent shot 100% of the time but if you're just starting out it may not be so suitable. i think you need to spend a bit more time thinking about your calibre choice. i'd say that you dont need both a .22lr and a .17hmr to begin with so choose one. i use a .17hmr which is great for rabbits but very pricey. if your budget is tight then it may be a good idea to get a calibre suitable all the way through from fox to red deer. however if you can afford three rifles then you may as well get a .223/.22-250/.222 for fox and probably a .308 or a .30-06 for your deer which will cover all species. get some other opinions but it all depends on your budget and how competent a shot you are. what do you reckon? Sterry 0
I know they have changed the law so that you can shoot pests i.e fox with larger calibres so if you wanted to i guess you caould do with just a .22lr and a .308 or similar? just food for thought. Quote Link to post

Your original lin up looks fine to me. Any calibre 6.5 and above is good for a first time stalker, and .308 takes a hell of a lot of beating. Quote Link to post
shottyscotty 3
thanks for the help. i have stalked before but with other keapers rifles so im not a complete novice Quote Link to post
dave1372 83
Be prepared for some heavy questioning about what experience you have had with centrefire and who is prepared to document your experience for deer stalking. I just applied for a 22-250 and .270 but got knocked back for the .270. I had said that I was looking at doing my DSC1 later on this year, I had been out stalking several times with a friend and was wanting to buy let days stalking, but apparently that was not good enough! I did not push the issue as I will re-apply after I get my DSC1. Good luck. Quote Link to post
harry mac 1
I did not push the issue as I will re-apply after I get my DSC1. That's exactly what most firearms departments rely on. If you can demonstrate good reason for any particular firearm, and there are no valid reasons to refuse, the police are obliged to grant the application. Again firearm ownership is not a privelidge, it's a right. You just have to jump through a few hoops to exercise it. Also remember, DSC qualifications are not compulsory, and if your firearms department insists you have them they are acting illegally. Join BASC (or similar) and get them to do the arguing for you. However, remember that BASC also offer DSC training and courses, so may be a bit biassed. Quote Link to post
