Borders Lines

Recommended Posts

Ive kept borders for a while now and to be honest, even out of out of well worked parents good lines etc you will still get a lot of litter wastage compared to other earth working breeds. There such a varied bunch some will be rarering to go at 12 months and some of thier litter mates wont even look at a rat in a trap at 18 months. Its a shame really, but there are still good working borders out there. In my opinion we all like different types, you find what suits you and stick to it, be it border, patterdale, lakeland bedlington they all have good and bad just some more than others

HOW DOES BREEDING FROM UPROVED DOGS BENEFIT THE WORKING ABILITIES IN ANY BREED? NOT JUST BORDERS.

I KEEP A FEW BLACK TYPE DOGS AND WOULDN'T BREED IF THEY DON'T PROVE THEMSELVES OVER A NUMBER OF SEASONS AFTER BEING PROPERLY TRIED AND TESTED. 1 THING I'LL SAY IS YA WON'T GET A PIECE OF PAPER WITH A LOAD OF FANCY NAMES ON IT, BUT YA HAVE A GOOD POSSIBILITY OF GETTING A DOG THAT YOU'LL HAVE TO DIG OUT IF PUT TO GROUND AND UNFORTUNATELY THEY WON'T WIN ANY ROSETTES EITHER.

Its the same with show winning stud dogs, they win a £1 rosette and a bag of dog food and yet get bred from.

half of these dogs are on there 3rd or 4th owner, ask yourself why?

if it was so good at working why was it passed on from home to home.

it jibbed or never even started but it looks nice and won a few shows, so its worth breeding from...........

NO

find one that is

i'm not a border man and agree that worker to worker is one way to produce workers :notworthy: . but its not the only way some workers will produce nothing no matter what they are put to. if you go to strong working bloodlines and put these lines to the front of the pedigree and get the offpring to the right homes you will be improving whats about there is no doubt about it. i take my hat off to anybody that are trying to improve the working qualities of any breed in any way. there are a lot of folk that will jump on threads like this. ask them for there credentials let them show you what they have acheived :whistling: tested terriers are the way to go. but if they arnt there get the next best thing. as you get more qualities on the front of the ped the less quallity stock will fall off the back . just my opinion :victory:

IF A LINING IS DONE AND THERE'S NO WORKERS PRODUCED THEN CULL AND DON'T REPEAT THE LINING AGAIN. IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT. IF A DOG THAT IS BRED FOR WORK AND IT DON'T MAKE THE GRADE """"CULL""" IT'S THE ONLY WAY FORWARD TO KEEP WORKING QUALITIES IN TERRIERS. TOO MANY BREED DOGS AND WHEN THEY DON'T ACHIEVE A GOOD WORKING STANDARD THEY DON'T CULL AND ALL TOO OFTEN THEY WILL STILL BREED FROM THESE DOGS AS THEY HAVE "GOOD BLOOD" TOO MUCH BREEDING AND NOT ENOUGH CULLING. OR IT COULD BE POSSIBLE THAT THEY ARE BLINDED BY THE FEW QUID THEY PAID FOR THE DOG, AND IF NO MONEY EXCHANGED HANDS IN THE 1ST PLACE THEN YOURE LOOSING NOTHING BY CULLING IT.

i have my dogs pedigree hanging on the wall in my kitchen, i would,nt on there workers from shirkers, it took me a long time to find a working line, and now i have my own, i have a litter due end of may, ill keep a bitch out of it, and if she makes what i want i will put her to a working dog, to keep my line going, the only way for me is worker to worker, im not interested in rosettes, or shows, but its nice to look back into my dogs lines, and find out what has worked and who bred it, and what lines not to breed from, been trying to get a pic up, cant doit.

some of the best working borders are breed in north west wales, they have a touch of J.P. fells in them, but there single handed workers, great finders and stayers, working some of the roughest mountains in the UK, stay away from kc breed stuff there full of faults the main one being they don't work, you still get a one off worker from KC stuff but they rarely pass it on to there pups and even if mated to working lines they add more bad than good, worker to worker, f**k the show dogs
