SportingShooter 0
You see and hear some strange things when out with the lamp. I've heard a few that I can remember thinking to myself, trying to figure out what they were. Most you can work out with enough thought. I can remember being out on my own walking with the lamp and shotgun at the time. It was mid-summer and it was that sort of time when it was getting dark around 9:30. I walked through a track which connects three different fields, nothing strange there, walked it hundreds of times. I thought I could hear something treading the ground behind me, so curiosity set in and I looked. Nothing there, Carried on, again, I could hear something treading the ground behind me, slightly bemused, I looked again, nothing I carried on and instead of looking straight away and turning around slowly, I stopped about 20 yards down and turned around quickly. It was a bloody calf! Where on earth the thing had been the first two occasions I really don't know But it was definitely standing there looking at me, even ran off when I walked towards it. Damn Animals

Guest Catcher
one that springs to mind, i used to exercise my dogs on a big estate, and when we entered the ground we sometimes used to encounter a few grey squirrels in the first field, so i used to let a pup off the lead first to see if she could nab one, anyway one morning we went in as usual with the pup running loose, and as she ran on, blow me, but one of the squirrels turned and squared up to the dog, of course she killed it instantly, but why it tried to make a fight, when it could have got to the tree easily i'll never know. One brave squirrels mate .Me and a friend were out nesting and i wil l say it was about 1974.Anyway we came accross a hawk trying to kill a weasel in stead of sitting back to whatch we were young and tryed to catch them.Result hawk flew weasel ran.Hawk must have been feeding young.atb.catcher.Till this day i regret no standing back and just watching. night moocher 41
This is a true story. about 18yrs ago on my usual mooch about on old waste land in the midlands,my old drawing dog was in front as he always was nosing about,he was 30ish feet in front of me and stopped dead in his tracks, watching him i stopped ,his head turning side to side as if listening for something. Now i was expecting something to rise out the grass or him lunge forward for what ever was there. what happened was just life saving for me the old dog edged back a few feet then some more till there was about 10 foot parting us,he started growling which to me was strange cause i couldn't see anything, then in a bat of an eyelid the ground dissapeared ,30 foot across and deep enough to throw a bus in ,it was an old mine shaft that had fell in. it was on the news and in the paper and to this day i say my old dog saved my life by stopping when he did because i would have walked right on top ov it at the time it went. the old dog was with me for 16yrs and went to ground with kidney failure, it never sunk in [pardon the pun ] till i saw the council pouring tonns of concrete down there, that could have been the walk me and the dogs ever took............................atb.steve.RIP gyp. digger63 3
I was once lamping on the local golf course and walked round a big clump of gorse and lamped a big fairway,in the beam i saw a bloke with a collie dog,no eyes lit up on him or the dog and they didn't even seem to aknowledge me,i flicked off the lamp for maybe 20 seconds and walked forward a bit, when i put the lamp back on they had both gone, and the nearest cover was a good distance away from their position, not claiming they were ghost or anything, but i cant explain it. A while later while lamping with a mate in the same place we were walking in a gulley and saw something on the sky line coming towards us,we thought it was a fox and waited a while before putting on the lamp, when the beam went on it was a collie never looked at the beam and crossed a bridge 30 yds in front of us,ignored us as though we weren't there, all perfectly true. No drink involved.
