Advise on shortening my .22lr barrel ?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys after abit of advise my barrel on my .22lr is 21" without the silencer so is quite long im thinking of shortening what would be the best length to have it cut down to and recrowned ? i was also wondering how much length of the barrel does it take for a subsonic to burn out and would it lose any accuracy ?

Difficult one and you will get a lot of conflicting views...although you don't seem to have any yet...!!!

A number of manufacturers are now delivering 16" barrels (arguably because many .22lr ar 1-16 twist so you get a complete revolution). Not entirely sure how that holds up, my .22WMR is 14.5 inches (it had been chopped before I got it) and I have heard of 12" .22lr. If yours is 21" then 16" takes 5" off that...a big chunk, seems an idea!

Accuracy wise there will again be a debate, but in principle the shorter the barrel the less accurate, but with a .22lr going from 21" to 16" is going to make VERY little difference to accuracy!

Ok, stand to be shot down as Deker indicated:

Why the hell would you want to shorten the barrel?? You have a rifle, why make it a pistol???

I would always want a rifle against a carbine????

Simple answer really, personal preference

Is it my imagination or do Anschutz make a 14.5" factory .22LR? One of their carbines it must be :hmm:

Ok im ready ! Its just a thought as to be honest i prefer carbine barrels to a normal length one and with the silencer on it just looks to long and i dont like it ! Also i read somewhere that you will get a better velocity using subs if the barrel is shorter i dont know if this is true thats why im asking for advise !

I think its the other way round?? Could be wrong but longer time in barrel gives higher muzzle velocity?? ;)

Right let's not get ahead of ourselves with talk of barrel length. We're talking about a 22LR, so the powder burn is basically complete very early, there's hardly any powder.

Therefore it's personal preference, so if you want a short barrel go for one. Some like the balance, others prefer a longer barrel. I'm on the 16" camp for rimfire barrels, very handy and I like the balance.

22lr on subs all the powder is burnt at 9".......i bought a cz452 plastic stock with a long barrel..iv had it for years.iv used it as a range rifle and to hunt..we were lamping out of a vihicle a few weeks ago and i got sick of the length of the dam thing,so i stuck it in the lathe and chopped it to 14" i have just got back from the range tonight.and it shoots just the same as it ever did at 50m same groups no diference at all..................

the only problem i have had is that i used to use a small plastic silencer and it would shoot with it after the chop...i have fitted a sac and its perfect
