Mr_Logic 5
Yes I had a 243 for a while, shot well but was too plasticky and just didn't feel solid. I'm not too worried on the deer front tbh, it's a nice to have. Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Well,I called shops, they all said no to that Howa, apart from one low part ex offer, so I'm stuck with it for the time being... where did you get it from mate ? cant you have a word with them and get it swapped ? i no there is a lad on the bbs called the wildthing he as a 204 and he gets good groups with his. maybe have a word with him and try some different loads Got it from Dowlings Fieldsports (trying to become South Bucks fieldsports) They dicked me about all the time while it got sent to Highland Outdoors, while promising the earth, and then refused to help. Recommend to avoid them, and they wouldn't do anything to help me at all, so stuck with it. I do have it grouping well, just not the 40gr vmax and not 39gr BK because I can't find any Quote Link to post
varminter 10
Sorry to hear you are having problems with the 204!!! I noticed that say that want to use it on Deer as well as Foxs / small game!!! , well if money is a bit tight mate why not try and sell the 204 and ( just like someone else mentioned ) get yourself a 243!!! A cracking caliber , you can load the 58 V-max for a devastating Fox and small game load , then load up to 85 - 100 grainers for a nice deer load!!!! I ran the 243 ackley and was very impressed with its performance!! Also i am running the 58 V-max in my 6PPC - a awesome load on Fox / bunnies / crows and magpies!!! All the best............... RAY........................................ Yes I had a 243 for a while, shot well but was too plasticky and just didn't feel solid. I'm not too worried on the deer front tbh, it's a nice to have. Well if you are not targeting deer , there are some nice sweet shooting calibers out there!!! , 222 / 223 of if want to keep to a 20 caliber - the Tactical Twenty ( 223 necked down to 20 cal ) ... I must admit , i do like the 6mms and up for Foxes / ground game!! , For instance in my 6PPC - it uses 29.5 grains of powder to drive the 58 V-max at a 3500fps average with excellent accuracy!!!! Have used this on Foxes and Longrange bunnies / magpies and crows , and its a really explosive and humane load!!! I know the 22-250 has a great following with pest shooters , but like most things - its always good to get a broad view of what others use / experiences , and if you can , see if you can get to try some of those calibers yourself!!! All the best....................... RAY....................................................... Edited April 8, 2009 by varminter Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
I had a 22-250 as my first centrefire, and was a fan. Rifle was too heavy and chopped it for 223 before I started reloading. 204 for a while yet though... Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Update on this one, I got the Howa shooting, but I'm still thinking of switching. My CZ 223 has worked well and the 204 is OK now (although I need to get case trimming sorted - the variable length means some bullets get correctly crimped while some cases get deformed, and Lee doesn't make a 20 cal factory crimp die). But I just kinda feel it would be better if I had both rolled into one - accurate and hard hitting, and capable of taking the muntjac too. So 22-250 here I come I think, and both rifles will go. Makes it easier on scopes, too. Quote Link to post

Mr_Logic 5
I wish! The 204 is not wanted, and the CZ was beautifully cheap to buy so doubt I will get much there sadly. Looking like a choice of Tikka T3 laminate, Remington model 7 lam/stainless or savage weather warrior. Remington is cheap and I'm not blessed with cash for now, but drawn to the Savage as it's ready to go and has a fast twist so shoots 69gr apparently. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Forget both and go for a .243! You can mix up all sorts of loads for this and it is Deer legal. .308 for Roe????? You can make some hot/light loads in .243 for bunny and fox and some hard hitters for the deer!!! Quote Link to post

You can make some hot/light loads in .243 for bunny and fox and some hard hitters for the deer!!! More confusion! But you do make a good point. Thing is, roe's about the only deer I shoot besides muntjac, so the 308 would be a tad redundant then. Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
OK, I gave in. Phoned up and changed the 22-250 form I sent for a 243. Hope that's the right call! Quote Link to post

varminter 10
Hi Mr Logic , Dont think you will be disappointed with the 243 ;) I was going to say 308 as well , now heres the thing!! The other day i was thinking about the 7.62 and my buddies have been on to me about getting a Parker Hale TX1200 / 83 / 84 Model.................. Well i gave in and bought a TX1200 for £200 , and what a bargain!!! These rifles will shoot sub half inch @100yds all day long!!! , there are 4 being used by my friends ( 2 TX1200s 1 M84 and 1 M83 ) , and they all shoot the same load brilliantly!!! Heres some photos........................ I have had the pleasure of shooting these rifles and seeing them being shot at long range and they still perform very well!! Recently whilst out hunting with mine i have had 2 first round hits on bunnies at 301 and 421yds.............. its good load on ginger too!!!!!!!! Nice thing is you can use softer loads ( always use caution ) for the smaller deer species too!!! Just some extra thoughts for you!!!! ;) All the best....................
