Hunter of T-N-G 1
I read that plummer terriers have Beagle Fell and Pitbull added to Jack Russel if the have pit bull would that make them ilegal under the DDA. I cant see the sense in it myself appart from the beagle blood for improving good nose as I owned a wee 3/4 russel 1/4 beagle and he was a cracker that said I seen plenty of russel with good nose strength and toughness. Any terrier I ever seen done rats. Quote Link to post
stevethefish 80
Hi,I got a patterdale, dream of a dog, brilliant in the house quiet as a mouse, but a great ratter,am not too convinced about dogs from proven stock,i think they do it naturally you just got to bring them a long a bit,but a patterdale definately recommended Got to agree mine comes from good stock not had to train him it came natural, patterdale all the way but plummers fantastic. Keeps 403
Its true that any terrier/dog can catch rats, but not every terrier can find them and follow the tubes underground to dig them out. Plummers for me make the best rat dogs, due to their nose and agility. Quote Link to post
wippydoo 12
manchester terrier (the old black and tan.)best ratting dog ever.quick ,can turn mid air and hard as nails.the world record for killing rats is held by an old black and tan called billy 100 rats in 7 and a half mins, when they used to put them in a pit and bet how long it took for an individual dog to kill a measured amount of rats.friend of mine was a professional verminator years ago and she swore by them Quote Link to post

roady 0
good ratting terriers are made by constant work,no matter how well bred they are if you dont put them in the situation for them to develope there noses you aint never gonna have a good ratting dog,a pup from a well bred parents is obvioslley a good starting point Quote Link to post

gnipper 6,467
Ormskirk Heeler The only thing they are any good at is biting and yapping, when I was a kid every old woman round here had one or two that were like footballs with legs and teeth. My russel pup is shaping into a good little ratter at only 8 month old and with a bit more experience he may turn out very good , he's got a good nose and is very keen but he'll never beat my lurcher to a rat (digs like a JCB and will plough through anything to catch one). Finding the right sort at the right price could be a problem. Quote Link to post
