FENS FEVER 147
are they naturally gaited or do they have to train with hobbles until they learn the gait? breeds here like morgans and tennessee walkers used to be natural gaiters but shows ruined them so they have to be hobbled to train the gait now what if a horse kicks into a gallop? Does someone watch to make sure each horse is truly trotting? Or can they not do anything other than trot because of how the harnesses are? a horse is broke or trained as a young horse so it shouldnt kick, but gallop yes ,it all depends on the driver or when a horse is pushed to its top speed it can brake[gallop]some horses a natually gated,it depends on the breeding if a horses parents grandparents are all pacers then it should pace but if theres trottimg lines in there then it could trot or be mixed gaited thats when the hobbles come in to it. DIGZY 4
when youre pushing youre horse to the limit it will sometimes break {gallop} when you are racing sometimes the horse behind you breaks and the cheat you by galloping for a bit and then they say they couldnt get da horse pacing again but some of the older lads will tell them to pull him back but if use are both 3 legged then its a fair enough race and the best horse wins and the money is paid then youre off to the Edited April 6, 2009 by DIGZY
Tiff 36
is it "three legged" or "free legged" pacing? And is pacing in harness different than trotting? Is one faster than the other? and is there a preferance for mares, stallions, or does it not matter?

Tiff 36
Am I correct thinking that pacing is where each sides legs are moving at the same time (right front/right rear), while trotting is front left moving at same time as rear right?

Tiff 36
it sounds like one of those signs that makes no sense until you finally twig what they mean ... I would have had this mental image of two Amish dudes cracking whips over the backs of Old Bessie and Big Fred the work horses
